Dog color....just curious about an observation.

NCBEAGLER,
Just for the record I need to run to no one including Bev. I am a big boy and fully able to hold my ground. Any place I need to!! I will agree with you on this one point however , we need not go any further with this. You need not worry in the future that I should chime in with with anymore information I might feel I have. This to avoid conflict! However should you ever decide to analze the mind of someone in the future I would take care not to pick a person who makes a living (very successfuly) in the field.
Best regards,
NYH

Ah you guys are so busy talking past one another you ain't hearing one another:-)
For me color ranks behind talent and soundness.Way behind. The way I see it I'd rather have the lemon or red colored dog in a cast all things being equal.Aka quality judges. If he is a sure nuff good one he will win or place simply because he will be noticed - stand out little more.It is indeed a two edge sword. But I don't see it - color as a hinderance or handicap.

NYH - I have a Master Degree in Counseling from Gordon-Conwell. The little jab aboyt Psych 101 was b/c of your field of work - saw it in your profile.
Now, my original point to this topic was to talk about any correlation between ability and color. Not necessarily to focus on red / white hounds.
As I previously stated, in looking at top hounds, HOY it appears that tri-color are over whelmingly dominating - even in coon hounds. Obviously there are more tri-color beagles out there - but still tri-colors seem to have much more then their fair share.
Most people seem to agree that color has nothing to do with ability - seems very logical to me. So then, what is the explaination?

NC Beagler,
Holy Moly give it a rest already! This should not become a whizzing contest. I guess I will have to go to another site for a while due to my inability to back down from this back and forth with you.
I'm becoming embarrassed over my new found weakness.
Rather than risk acting in a manner that would make me seem less than a gentleman I am off this site for a while. At least till I can cool off. By the way as I said I have been in the psych field for a long time and am well respected by those who work with me. And while I try not to brag on myself or my hounds.....much....
...I will say this. I was a 2001 New York State Employee of the Year in Childrens and Adolescent Mental Health. And while I have never heard of the school you mention getting your Masters from, I congratulate you on the accomplishment. Further more after reading that you got the "little jab" as you called it for me by reading my profile I could not help but do a little profile reading myself.
Now what I can't figure is why a guy with your professed education and expertise is working as a " Occupation: National Sales Manager " and NOT in the field. Hummm! Is there another NC Beagler that joined on Jan 6th 2003? Just curious!
Any hoot for those I have so enjoyed talking to for so long I will miss you. But I'm out of here before I become something I am not proud of. Remember what I have said in the past. I will not keep a fighter in the kennel....and I will not become one myself.
Peace and good running to all of you. Or should I say.....Y'all..see guys (and girls) you taught me something after all.
Good bye.

When my life on earth is ended....this is all I'm gonna say...Lord I've been a hard working pilgrim on the way!
Look guys, no one here sees any trouble except you two. NYH, hang around, my goodness you've been here from the start and you know this is small taters to some of the Redtick, shock collar, cold-nosed and other stuff we've gotten downright gut-bucket over! If you think you're being hammered, ya oughtta be me right now.
Leave it to two psych professionals to over-analyze each other.
Cool weather is 'round the corner and our "ain't run no dogs" angst will be over soon.

Full Moon this past week, guys. That's what it was. Fights used to be a lot worse when I coached in HS, on a full moon. NC, I haven't talked to you before, but I have NYH, and Alabama John and I even invited him South to hunt with us. We don't extend that invite to many yanks, with the intention of letting them return. I get my panties bent out of shape sometimes, too. Most of us do. Don't want to see either of you leave. Red & white hounds
A little back ground I am 70 years old ! And I am going to speak of experances I had as A boy growing up with my grand father and his red&white fox hounds .Grandpa culled pups by color if they were not true red & white they did not stay. His pack of hounds was known for their honest tracking and indurance. I have heard meny compliments from other houndsmen on the indurance of these red&white hounds. So I would have to say color has know bearing on A hounds indurance. Allso I would not hesitate to breed this female . I would think her problem is not hereditory but physical.
Me Too !!!!
I've been in the PSYCH field all my life. We'll it all started when i turned 16 or so, but for the most part i've always been NUTS, CRAZY, KOO KOO or what ever you call it but do know a good beagle when i see it. I'm with Bev on the Black and Tans, NO white on the toeseis. I had a pair of true B/T's when i was in H.S several years back and superior GRADE dogs i might add.
As for the Red/White thing, well here it comes because you ask.
NYH, I think i could hunt with you and get along with you very well BUT you must remember I am a nut and i don't care who finds out and most others are nuts and are afraid that someone will find out. So now you know me as best as anyone can. Now on to the Red/White thing.
I have b/w/tan male, 4 blue tick pups, 1 red/white female pup, 1 red/white male pup. Now these pups will run their first season this year. They are all started very well. The R/W female goes 100 mph with no slowing down. The R/W male has as much hunt as any pup i've got but a little slower. The blue ticks are going to make great gundogs and maybe a trialer for one of the ticked females. The B/W/Tan male is a cold trailer with a good nose and a slower dog and pretty close to the line and does well with the pups BUT, the Red/White dogs are my choice.
The reason the Tri-Color dogs are winning more is simply there are more out there. You can bet if there is a judge that will judge a dog on color he is a cull and i mean the judge. The Red/White dogs are classy/flashy dogs and they are looked at harder and when he screws up it is seen because all eyes are on him. The tri-colors are just out there probably making twice the mistakes but the judge is too busy watching the red/white dog because he wants one and if that dog does well he wants one so he wants to see how it measures up. I eventually am trying to go all red/white simply because of the looks and they MUST have hunt in em. I will not cull a good tri-color though simply because i am not that far into the nut program. I don't wear blinders. It's the difference in driving volkswagens or VETTES.

NYH - please don't leave! I starting to enjoy talking w/ you! And I'm not taking this serious at all!! Sorry - its gone this far! My wife just read all this and thinks its silly - I agree.
I'll extend a hunting trip to you if your interested - my family (dad and brothers) have leased 586 acres of prime rabbit country in the rolling hills of piedmont NC. Scrub pine fields make for exciting races!

dog color
n.c. beagler, somehow you missed it!!! Cress' Comanchee Tracker is one of I think only 4 or 5 dual hall of famers in the ARHA!!! I'm line breeding this line of red dogs and haven't come up with a quitter as of yet. As a matter of fact last season two of my friends and I had 12 dogs on the ground and the weather was terrible (cold and raining hard) at the end of the day I had 2 of the only four that were still running (RED DOGS)!!! So with that being said my calculation is that color has nothing to do with it.

Thanks for your input Chris. The dog you mentioned wasn't on the list I was referring to. I looked at a list of 170 dogs referred to as the Gundog Beagle Hall of Fame. It includes dogs from AKC, UKC, ARHA and CKC and it is not by any means an exhausted list of champions.
But Chris, why isn't there a higher percentage of non tri-color dogs being recongized as champions or hall of fame beagles - - that is what I am really trying to get at here. The percentages don't seem proportionate to me. Someone mentioned earlier about possible prejudice against red dogs in field trials, other have mentioned that they stand out and their faults are more quickly noticed, etc.

You said something about walkers (tri-colors) are most hall of famers in coon hounds and tri-colors in beagles...I think that is simple that tri-colors are more popular in most places than other colors or breeds of coon hounds.
