I can tell lots of times who is going to win a cast too. Usually I will tell them too. You know how I can tell, because they have a better dog than me. If some of you people would quit posting how bad it is and dog-up things would get much better.
Heck I get beat fair and square. If more of you whiners could admit that Trialing in all formats would be better.

Guys I have to speak up for Kevin.
He is one of the most honest and best hearted people you will ever meet. He is as honest as the day is long. He has judged my hounds prolly 10 times and I have won only once..but I will say this..he always has given his all in bringing back the best dog. If anyone has anything bad to say about Kevin than they don't know him and need to shut up. I judge all the time too and I know how it is. Kevin..don't worry about those people..they need to start judging and maybe they will have a new appreciation for it.
Keep your head up son..you are the reason the sport has a future...not them.

If you take field trialing serious, you need to have your head examined.
I take judging seriously for one hour and then I leave it behind. If someone wants to make it personal, they can waste there time and effort.
As an owner or handler;
I feel I have gotten a fair shake most of the time.
My dogs have had a couple bad calls. I have seen them pick up checks and the judge wasn't there (it happens, can't get it all).
I have had some bad judges, some that weren't physically able to judge, and probably had some buddy judging. If I had buddy judging, it wasn't painfully obvious except on no rabbits/hunt and handling.
As a judge I have had bad handlers in about 1 out 3 casts I have judged.
I have had handlers try to talk me into a check, reword what I said and then ask "Now you gave my a dog a check down there didn't you, how come it is not on the score."
I have had more than a few that had no clue what the rules were and get mad.
I have been accused of buddy judging a hunt and handling cast. Two dogs hunted the whole hour, one dog wouldn't handle. The winner was the best DOG, that happened to be owned by a friend.
There are owners/handlers that all judges know.
I've been warned as I was going out by other judges saying "That guy is going to argue and whine".
As a judge I try to give a warning up front.
If you have a question, ask it. If you have a problem with a call we will go to the master of hounds after the cast.
If you argue, you go to the truck.
If you cuss, you go to the truck.
I am not out there to debate my judgement calls or have to justify them to you, I am out there to judge a cast of dogs. If you want to debate/argue a call, we can do it in front of the Master of Hounds
If you want a better explanation of what I saw, I will do it at the tailgate after the score card is signed in front of the rest of the cast that wants to hang around and listen.
There are a whole lot more bad owners/handlers than there are judges.
I don't judge for the money, I do it because I feel I can do it fairly, and have the physical ability to give a good effort. If people don't step to judge, a 40 dog hunt will take two days.
I go to field trials to run my dogs and have fun.
I OFTEN have someone I don't know handling my dog while I am out judging a cast. Do you think I came to judge? I would much rather be out there watching my own dog run.

Crabby i have known you for sometime and by far thats the smartest words you have spoke. I judged my first cast in 1989.Guess how many protest i have had? 0! If you judge suck it up its not for the weak...
People win 95% of the time because the got good dogs .
I owe everyone in the cast 1 hour of running and scoring . I cant get it done much anymore . Thanks Cigarettes.
. If you cant take it quit. Run them hounds and stay home . First world i missed in years , know why?
I love my woman and enjoy my life .... I am burnt out so before saying something i am sure i will regret later. I will stay home.
As far as the plates. whatever.Ky and Ohio rule so when they win , we cheated..... Its been the friends i have made that keeps me coming .
Not the trophies. Good luck to all at the world . Ps if i win its cause my dogs ready to go. Let the big dogs eat.

Boys just live and learn.I pass up alot of clubs that are close to my house just to go where I know Iwill get a fair shake. No one is perfect and a judge will sometimes miss a call ,but if I think he has tried his best to be fair,Iwont say anything.Just know your rules and dont take any BS off of thesecrooked judges.

Kevin I was standing there when you were accussed of bubby judging,I was the guy that handled the dog for the other man.No one can ever take anything away for the 2nd place dog I would love to own a hound like that.I would have never dreamed that you would have been labeled as a cheat. The dog that won deserved the win.The dogs ran the whole time in plain site and I seen every breakdown and check. If they call you a cheater than I must be one to.I would have scored it the same way.Even though Saturday was the first time I met You I seen your hustle and will when judging.I hope that I will see you at the next trial.

I sympathize with you and know exactly how you feel.
Eleven years ago I moved here to Tn. from N.H. where I had attended Large Pack on Hare trials. Never judged but often served as a running marshal which I always enjoyed.
Here in Tn. the only format for the type of dogs I run is the ARHA Little Pack. I joined a club and started attending the trials. I could see that there is ALWAYS a need for judges and several at the club encouraged me to get my judges license [which I did] and then my Master of Hounds license [which I did]
I LOVED judging the hounds as this put me right where I wanted to be! Right up close to the action! At the time I was 45 years old and definetly one of the "older guys" judging. Be that as it may I quite often judged 4-5 casts a hunt. Why? Cause there was always a need. Even though on Sundays I'd have a hard time getting off the couch!
As years continued to pass and I started to experience some physical limitations like gimpy knee and ankle I had to limit myself to two casts a hunt.I still came home after judging with my face and arms covered in dried blood, shirts shreded from the greenbriars and my wife would always ask" are you sure your having fun?" My answear was "yes".
The only way I knew how to judge was" full speed ahead and darn the torpedos" Nobody should ever think I ever gave it any less the 100% of what I was physically capable of.
Four or five years ago I was judging at the Tn. State Hunt and of course State hunts pull alot of the "big boys" running for hound of the year. I judged a cast as I saw the dogs do. We had several split tracks where I could not determine the "original" rabbit and dogs had to be handled.I could tell several handlers were getting upset. One leashed up his dog with 10 minutes to go and just went to the trucks. At the end of the cast the only people that would sign the card and shake hands with me were the husband and wife from Ky. whose hound won.One of the other handlers who was half my age or even younger than my son told me " to go F myself and threatened to fight with me.Two other handlers that had come from out of state went back to the clubhouse and sat there pointing at me to other hangers on and trying to stare me downI was told later that these folks were all in the running for HOY points and that's why they were pissed off. What? That's an aceptable excuse?
At the end of the cast I told them that I would be happy to explain any ruling that I had made in the field.I wouldn't change it but would tell them whyI scored it the way I did. Not ONE of them asked and even though they refused to sign the card not ONE of them protested.??????? Came to the conclusion that they were just a bunch of "spoiled sports"
Can't really say why that was the "straw that broke the camels back" but I've never judged another cast or acted as a master of hounds since. Many said" you just got to be tough, let it roll off yor back, they're just jerks don't worry about it",etc.Truth of the matter is it wasn't a case of being "tough" or not or letting it bother me or not. I judged cause I flat out enjoyed the fire out of it and as I said it kept me right on top of the hound work which is where you really find out what's "under the hood". When it quit being fun/enjoyable I quit doing it.You think I'm going to a Field Trial for a fight?
I've seen poor losers stomp their lower place trophies on the clubhouse floor, guys have shouting matches in the clubhouse in front of everyone, old friends that no longer speak,etc.,etc.
Do I still go to field trials? Yes, a few a year. Why? Because I love a good rabbit dog and want to see em run. Because there are still ALOT of good people to see and visit with and Yes I like to see how my dogs stack up with the competition.
Maybe it's just my personality but I'd much rather go sit on the campstool any day [or night] with an old buddy and listen to our dogs pound where I can praise his and he can praise mine.

Hey Kevin
Hey Kevin , I think I figured out who you are , were you the little guy at the MCBC who wore a Camo Jacket and handled a hound 3 hunts ago ? Ronnie judged your first cast out ? The hunt was won on hunting and handling ? If so do you know who I am ? If that was not you ,I'm sorry for the mistaken identity .

Field Trailing is a full time job. I got 1 already. Back in the early 90s i was gone for endless days trialing. And loved it . People change . Things change. I was burnt out in 98 and quit. Came back in 01 i am burnt again so i will step back probaly for the final time .The ledgends i have ran with and admired are all gone or have quit.
The friends i have made are many . The enemies are few. The big wins were awesome. I still got my first trophie and will probaly have it buried with me .lol . I just aint the same guy i used to be. I have other duties calling. My dogs will be strong as years past just not gonna spend what little time this life has left sitting away from my clan all day or weekend long it aint fun anymore.
I would strongly suggest for any one to try a format of there choice. Its a life changing experiance. Trialing is not for most judging is for few .Thats the monster that will kill it all. Judging . Unless there is a new adaptation of rules nkc will kill itself .If you are judging keep it up . If you are buddy judging . It will catch up with ya .Once again Go Bluegrass boys .Hoping old buzz can pull it out . Probaly his last round. Go spade , chesters a counting on ya . Blair bring it home with yours or mine. Boys watch the little tail less wonder. I will be ridin in friday night late......
