seen a hound take off in front of you and pop out
from behind you. I know a guy that jump shot a
rabbit, and killed a dog in one shot. The dog popped
out at the same time as the rabbit?" I won't say all,
but a lot of guy's that jump shoot ; don't have dogs
that can continuously circle a rabbit back to the gun
at least the ones I know. I have seen enough hounds
at field trials that can't run a rabbit on their own.
To me it is about hound work, and I am a rabbit
hunter first. Rabbit hunting is a sport, unless we
are starving and need the meat,
I don't have a problem if someone wants to jump
shoot over their dogs, but don't brag about how
many rabbits you shot. It's about high numbers
to a lot of guys. When rabbit numbers are low
they want to blame every predator in the woods,
not the fact they take 300 to 500 rabbits a year.
First of all, when I say jumpshooting a rabbit I am referring to shooting a rabbit that a dog just jumped. Not one that I jumped. If I jump one, I call the dogs because I don't know where they are. Secondly, I'm not bragging about how many rabbits I have killed. Why would I brag about a low number like that when there are people that kill hundreds? My point was was there were nearly 90 rabbits put on the ground (mostly jumpshot) without endangering anyone or their dogs. It's not that we don't have dogs that will circle them back, its that I don't want them to have a chance to get in a hole. I'm going to kill the rabbit that has been jumped the VERY first chance I get. No, its not about high numbers. But, I am out there to kill rabbits.

Pete Young, I couldn't have said it better myself.

Gun shy dogs

I hunt in The Strips Of Many Holes and if you don't jump shoot you will miss a lot of oppurtunities to kill a rabbit. I do not jump shoot and choose to get all the dogs in and declare the rabbit fair game insted of waiting for it to run a circle and go in a hole. Just a safe compromise that puts meat on the table a little safer. Ask R- Chaser about my uncle Frog and what jump shooting can cause.
Desire and the abilities to account for the rabbit.

NO JUMPSHOOTING AROUND MY DOGS PERIOD, I WILL LOAD AND RIDE. If your going to do that you don't need a dog. It's the best way to shoot a dog, besides that if you only shoot the rabbits the dogs run most of the rabbits you kill will be buck rabbits, and I do mean run the rabbit for 30 minutes or longer. If the rabbit holes then maybe you can run him again later, if you expect to have game their has to be something left to breed.

rabbithoundjb brought up a good point, if you check the rabbits you kill after they have been run awhile, almost all will be male rabbits, untill you get into Feb., when they start to mate. Dont believe me, next year start at the begining of season, and keep track, you have to check them within five or ten minutes after being killed to be sure, after that it's hard to get a positive sex on them.

KYHunter79,
out of all the post on this thread what
makes you think my post was directly
about you? I see post all the time with
so called great dogs, and a pile of rabbits
that the dogs did not run. I hunted a place
last Saturday that had rabbits running
everywhere, but if the dogs were not
running them they were not shot.
It would have been easy to kill 30
rabbits or more, instead of the 11
we shot. If I want to eat rabbits
that bad, I will kill some of the ones
I raise. I understand some guys
have to jump shoot, because of
the terrain they hunt in. I don't have
a problem if someone jump shoots,
I just choose not too.

My rules for folks whom hunt with me-

If the dogs aren't on a rabbit and you see one, let's get the dogs on it.

If the dogs are running and you pop one out, do what you want.

If the dogs aren't running and you jump-shoot one, you will be warned.

If the dogs aren't running and you jump-shoot again, you will not go with me again. You must not understand English and have some brain damage.

I am there for the running first so humor me.
If the dogs are running, you know where the dogs are so it is safer.

Had a dog shot once. Rabbit took off down the edge of some thick thickets, shot was made just as the dog in the thickets saw the rabbit and barrelled out right behind it as the shot was made.
Having a dog start screaming and then go into shock isn't something I want repeated. Day was ruined. Dog in the clinic for a week and was very fortunate to have lived.

I don't care for the jump kill, BUT it really doesn't make that much difference how you kill a rabbit if your going to kill it as long as you are counting and leave the seed. Now if your hunting with me and my dogs it matters. ;) Wayne

thh058, its not that females dont circle, they are rarely found above ground during the day, and when they are, they usually head straight for a hole. In late february we do start killing some.
