northern deep freeze- who ventured

Post by TallPaul »

Ok with all the talk on another board about hounds that could get it done in extreme conditions, who ventured out this weekend and did some running and gunning? Or were you walking, shaking and shivering? I imagine most cottontail runs were straight to a hole, anyone run any hares?

Single digits here in PA with lots of snow. I was out for a few hours yesterday and we only put a few up. My pup did real good, but they were short races straight to a hole. I got tired of the cold before he did. LOL

Myself and a friend of mine Started about 8AM, and hunted until 5PM. He took a gun I just wanted to watch what the dogs would do in the cold and Snow, and man was it ever cold. We Jump 15, and only got one. The best running was in the aftenoon, it just happen the Sun was shinning against that hill side, we had two run that afternoon that lasted 45 mins. the rest of the running was very poor. I can tell you this, that hot SHOWER never felt so good.

Not me, at noon here today it was -31 celcius without the windchill factor and it was blowing out there. The weather site said it was -46 to -50 with the wind chill in the city and it's colder out where I am. Needless to say I felt no need to hit the woods just to prove what I already know.

we made it out friday here in n.e. ohio 15 deg.and blowing snow. had to put my hard hitters back in the box. we then shot 8 in four hours. it was very tough scenting though. those peanut rollers with the big noses earned there keep that day. i'm glad that i have two styles of dogs at my kennel for this reason.

-27 here yesterday morning. I waited for it to warm up to -20 and then went. I can't help it, this is what I look forward to all week. When I don't have to work I am going hunting. The dogs ran pretty good. Killed 2 in front of them, passed up a few strays. Then just ran a young dog alone, no guns for an hour.

-28 this morning but not as windy. Dogs ran even better. Had several good races, only stayed out for an hour or so. My son killed one. Dropped him off and ran a young dog for about 2 hours, no guns.

I don't stay out as long in this weather but it never gets too cold to hunt. I will take this over 95 and 95% humidity any time.

I went out and started my truck to leave from northern Wis to head back to MI. The thermometer in the truck told me it was -26 and there wasn't a bit of wind in the air. That is the kind of cold that when you breathe in through your nose, your nostrils stick together. LOL!

Nope, I didn't have the dogs with me. I was on my way back from MT visiting my sister that is terminal with cancer. I am kind of glad I didn't have dogs, it just made it easier to jump in the truck and drive instead of wishing that I could go hunting. I will say, however, that this was the first time that I had to leave my heater on full heat just to stay warm in the truck... :)

We hunted saturday morning.
Ran 6, circled 5, and shot 3.
We left around noon because once teh wind started howling the scenting shut down.
Temp was 14 when I left the house. High was in the low 20's for the day.

Field trialed in Chilocothe, OH yesterday.
got 2nd in a cast and judged a cast.
I think the 2:15 minuted ride in the dog box was harder on the dogs than running.

Scenting conditions Saturday were tough. The dogs got it done, but not without some really tough checks and digging around. There were a few lines they mouthed on and could not run. Some checks were so long that I tried calling the dogs off and they wouldn't come. As I started that way, they got the track going again.

Sunday the high was in the 20's. It was in the teens all morning.
Sunday the first cast out was tough, but the dogs did get it done. The pack work was ugly, but they did run a few. Spent more time working checks than running the line. Jim McGuire's Neal dog put it to us.

I judged a cast of champions. At times dogs were walking the line and not barking. Other times they were barking and not moving.
It was about 30 minutes in when they hit one they could run. It wasn't pretty running, but they did circle. It was in a pine thicket, if the running would have been any better, I would have missed a lot.
