What has AKC done for us?

A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)

Not sure if I am correct so I guess this is more of a question. I heard that the AKC supported and contributed money to PETA. Does anyone know if this is true? If so I am no longer using AKC.

It looks like it gets down to one or two points here, Akc dogs can get you higher prices for your pups and some here feel that Akc dogs have truer bloodlines that they can trust. I still agree with some that it doesn't make a beagle run any better after a rabbit, dogs don't seem to care if they are papered or not! It looks like everyone of us has to decide if it's the right or wrong thing to do when using the different registerities for our dogs. The reason we have the different registerities and different formatts within them is the same reason we have hamburgers and hotdogs and pepsi and coke at the Sonic, each of us like different things and I'm glad for that. When we get down to it we can probably see some good and bad in all groups. Woodrow

Yes it takes 3 wins and 120 points to finish an AKC FC.

I can only speak for SPO trials, not LP.
In my area they usually shoot over the 2nd series so that no gun shy dogs progress to winners pack. At smaller trials they shoot over the 1st series.

About 90% of the AKC clubs down here that I have been to run in the wild. Only about 10% run in pens. The pens are nice but I myself prefere the wild. Not as many rabbits and the dogs have to work harder. Not to mention the club hounds familiar with a pen tend to have an advantage.

Just because a dog is registered with one registry or another doesn't make it a better dog. I would never knock a dogs ability because it has one set of papers or another or none at all. But I will say this, A UKC dog or an NKC dog can only trial at UKC or ARHA trials or open registries...... An AKC dog can trial anywhere. Papers or no papers they all can hunt rabbits and make their owners proud.

Out of all the dog registries the AKC was the only one that helped put me in contact with other knowledgeable dog owners to fight a bad animal control ordinance that our local humane society was trying to get passed. Without the assistance of the AKC it would have most likely passed, but we modified it significantly and enlightened my local city and county councils about the negative issues of the humane society.

I won’t register my beagles with any other registry besides the AKC! No other dog registry is as willing to work with hunting dog owners on these issues in Indiana. The AKC has a world of information to take advantage of!

* I enjoy meeting new Beaglers & Squirrel Dog Owners. It's a blessing to find other's with such unique interests.
* I also enjoy helping future hunters.

mybeagles,
Nope! Not SPO, only LP on hare. But like I said I have marshalled LP hare trials to the end and have watched SPO to the end and have personally never seen anyone shoot over anything. Maybe I was just looking the wrong way at the time. LOL Oh and just a curious side note, I did champion out one of my males in ARHA and my females would have also championed out in the same format if it were not for the 10 hour drives to get to any of the trials, they only lacked a few points each if memory serves me right.

Ronny,
I don't think (not 100% on this) that the AKC has ever contributed DIRECTLY to PETA. However what I do know is that they have supported programs that PETA has also supported. There was a big story a few years ago about some sort of show or clinic that IAMS, AKC, and HSUS were all co-sponsering. If you didn't know PETA is a big backer of HSUS. So by relation the AKC partnered up with PETA/HSUS. This was not the only time this has happened, just the first one in my memory.
