THIS BOARD SURE WOULD BE A NICE PLACE TO TALK ABOUT SOMETHING WORTH WHILE.

Leon,

I was suprised to see your post about Boldstrokes dominating Crain's. Not to add fuel to this fire but I will. I've owned Boldstroke, judged Boldstroke, hunted Boldstroke. My kennel is comprised of the Crain dogs and some Branko. If the Boldstroke line hasn't vastly improved, I'll smoke you with my youngest pup. :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip:

Without commenting one way or the other about the Boldstroke dogs, as I have never seen one that I know of.

A few months back on this board or another board Gill offered for sale the whole Boldstroke kennel at what I thought was a very fair, even cheap, price for such a well-respected and well-known kennel.

Did someone buy it? Who? Where are they located? Maybe it was someone more convenient to those down South who are showing an interest in the Boldstrokes on this board.

Gill did not sell his kennel , cut back some but did not sell all his dogs. They are slowly moving down south, so there will be some closer to you soon. :)

As far as all the bad mouthing, it will always be there as long as there are different styles of beagles. A man that likes a slow dog talks junk about a fast one and man likes a fast one talks junk about a slow one. It never stops comes with the territory.

For all the people who have posted that would rather not have a Boldstroke please post why. What were their faults?

BJK, I have some Boldstrokes and don`t live to far from you, when ever you want to run let me know. We can run and see what happens but only on good sport. Not trying to make enemies. Just to compare and have fun.
What dogs did you judge? When and where? What class, LP PP UKC, AKC??

My muckbottom dogs

I have a couple of dogs out of what you would refer to as Boldstroke dogs and they are incredible. They are some of the best dogs I've owned and not one came from Gil Davis. I've never met Gil, but would like to, he's created some great hounds over the years. I don't trial or know many people in dogs, but I do know dogs. In answer to the original question, the boldstroke line is worth buying into. Don't buy one and write off the whole line or take the advice of someone who has. I bought mine from someone who waded through a bunch of boldstroke dogs (13 in fact) and found five that fit him. Sold the rest down south where they became the stars of their new kennels. They are good hounds, they do have foot and hunt and are dogs that most people would be proud of. They didn't cut it at Muckbottom though. You might want to try him for pups, he has taken the best of boldstroke and weeded out the rest. All his muckbottom blood is AKC registered also. He bought some from Gil originally, but put in a lot of work and is producing great puppies from his own stock with the Davis background. His name is Jim Brown and he lives in Lodi, Ohio. I won't put someone elses number out, but you can find it. It is VERY rare that he has pups for sale, but I would recommend his over anyone's. I appreciate him selling me these pups and if you get one you will too. Make sure YOU SEE THE PARENTS RUN and don't buy something on a name. I have seen differences in foot, check work, line control and hunt. You may decide you don't like them, everybody has their preference and nobody is wrong. I hope that answers your question and helps in some way. I have a question I have to ask from reading the last four pages of this discussion. It seems that if someone produces a good hound from Boldstroke blood, no matter how far back or crossed with what, he was told by Gil how to breed it and his praises are yelled on high. If someone else produces a bad hound from that blood, he is a counterfeit and you shouldn't trust him. I would never put a breeder's reputation in anyone's hands. Gil's reputation is built on what he does, not what Joe schmoe does with a dog he bought from Gil a couple Generations back. That isn't fair to either person. Gil Davis didn't make the beagle, God did. All we can do is mold it to fit our likes. That's all Gil did or anyone in beagles with any line can do. Everyone got their dog from somewhere, it's a matter of being trainer enough to get what you want out of it. I think Gil made some fine hounds and I mean no disrespect to him, but unless you bought it from Gil someone else had a say in that dogs outcome, so don't blame or credit Gil with the whole responsibility. I guess my question is more of a comment, but ease up on Gil and give some credit to the guys who are still advancing his stock to new levels like Jim Brown. How hypocritical to call someone four times a week for dogs and even get dogs(what you would call boldstroke)and then never mention him because Gil has a bigger name and you can sell more pups. Or even down talk the very stock you are dying for and calling for, so you can give no credit whatsoever to the breeder. I guess if you want boldstroke, call Gil. If you buy from Jim it's muckbottom stock. I put my real name on here, no cute little handle to hide behind. I'm not in beagles to sell dogs or be everyone's best friend. I'm just a nobody who believes in giving credit where credit is overdue and while I give Gil his due respect, I own Muckbottom dogs. P.S. Don't bring a little puppy up here or anything that was here, they left for a reason.

I have been listening to the bragging until I can't help but laugh. When someone makes excuses about why their dogs haven't won, just ask yourself, do I want to make excuses for my dogs. If not, find a houndsman that is successful. If my dogs were so bad I had to brag them up to sell them, I would give them away as pets.

If you are buying dogs for little pack or hunting, do yourself a favor and just look at the hunt results instead of listening to bragging or all the talk.

If you want to buy good dogs, talk to Kissinger or Sammy Wells, or Jim Hughes, or Josh Long or Brad Crouch, or Surbers, or Dennis Kennedy, or Hills, or Sagamon, or Pete Baker, or Lloyd Gray, or David Schlaug, or Spicers, or Painters, or Bruner, or any other houndsman that has been successful with more than one dog. I don't see any of these people bragging up their dogs and all are successful. AND, I have run with their dogs and they have good dogs!

well ive said it before but here goes again. i got two dogs from gil . one has a home for life... the other dog was still improving and unfortunately died.. he accidentally bred a totally different female. shes not even all beagle. i kept one pup and he is so much like his father when they were both here i have got them mixed up when doing chores in the dark, same voice, they are so much alike in other ways. , this doesnt happen everyday. i call that very potent breeding. gill has done me a big favor with the two dogs i got from him.. thanks gil. big dog wrote .... It is simply amazing to me that all of the people that do the popping off are always guests that no one has ever seen or heard of before. big dog thats right . i wish it was illegal .. pete

Hey Fellas, All I was trying to do was get in on bjk and Leon's little run they were setting up I'll drive for that. But now I see we are going to talk about selling and trialing dogs. I really don't need to get on here and tell you my dogs are good, and I won't nor do I need some one else to, but thanks Mike I'll send another pup  See alot of trialers don't buy from me,most of my dogs go to rabbit hunters and are sold by word of mouth. You guys no them rabbit hunters the guys who don't live and die by the 15 second check or the 1 hour hunt to prove a dog. They prove a dog by bringing the bunny to the gun. Trials are nice if thats what you like, but by no means is a dog any less of a dog because he doesn't go to one. The names you talked about up top JCM are great houndsmen and put alot of time in to get what they have, and they like the trials and thats great. I would imagine they hunt some to, I would rather hunt alot and trial a little, its nice to go to some and look at dogs. Buy no means will I buy a dog because its a champion, just because it carrys a title don't mean it will suit me and I have to feed it. I have run Boldstroke and Crian hounds and there still is a little Big Meadows and Double Crow back behind the house I won't bad mouth any of them nor would I say I could whip them, because every dog has his day,and thats a fact. But bjk i will compare freezers with you buddy  Jim Brown Muckbottom Kennels P.S. Have agood time running tose dogs Guys and gals the good ZLord gave them to us to enjoy not fight about....
