 ;) I have seen european hare in Ct and the hudson river valley of NY so it wouldn't surprise me if there were also some in NJ there are very few and they are considered a trophy. But they are listed in the NY fish and Game regulations with a season limit. I personaly have never had the pleasure of shooting one in the US buthave seen them dead in the road or shot by other hunters. Allthough I believe them to be more of a mix breed between cotton tails and hare. but I'm no expert by any means. they seem much smaler than the ones I have taken in europe. rumor has it that the rich and famous of the NE area imported them in the 1900's for sport and that some still survive today. call them jacks or hare one thing I do know about them if they are european hare is that they will run like a deer and may travel miles in one day their terrotory is much larger in porportion to a cotton tail. Good luck.

Hare and rabbits do not cross together. Jack rabbits are a hare. They along with European Hare were brought to Long Island, and other areas etc. by some of the packs in the early 1900's. The last probably in the 1930's. By The Windhom Pack on Long Island. The four hares we have in North America are the Snowshoe (Varying Hare), the Desert Jack Rabbit, The White tailed Jack Rabbit and the Black Tailed. The Desert is found in the desert southwestern part of the country (Mainly Arizona) and is the largest. The Black tail is usually found at higher elevations or arid areas but not true desert type terrain and the white tailed accross the Great Plains or open range land. The snowshoe the smallest of the hare look to high elevations in the Mts or the Northern States along the border.

I too have ran Jack rabbits in Minnesota. Near the White Bear and Hugo area. Was on a buddy's farm with some young dogs and looking for cottontails along a field edge and ran jacks instead.. They were fast and very hard to shoot..
