doing stupid things? !!!
i hate to admit this, but here it is. over the weekend i drove a total of 1600 miles to look at a progreesive pack grand champ. i was very disappointed to see that this dog had none of the qualities that the owner said.many excuses were made... it cost me 200.00 in gas money to learn a valuable lesson. not to mention living in my vehicle the whole weekend. my advice to anyonelooking for a good dog is to stay within an easy driving distance of your home. my friend said it best" what do you think, this dog is going to get in a telephone booth and put a superman shirt on" ? anyone made this same mistake plese post your story.

?
Drove 11 hours to try a coondog based on what the owner told me it was just what I wanted. When it got dark we turned the dog loose in about 15 mins. it started A track and went straight out of the country. I rode around with the guy for about an hour listoning to his excuses for what happened. We didn`t find dog he droped me at my car and home I went I refuse to drive a long way to try a dog after that.
The view is all ways the same from behind.

dogs
Pat there is A guy by the name of Mark Erwin that has A couple dogs for sale . He has A UKC field champion named assie I don`t know if he will sell it or not. It`s picture is on UKC board he just placed 4th in the PP world hunt The dog is not 2 yet I will vouch for Mark as to being honest. the assie dog is exceptional will not be cheap but if he can be baught will be a once in a life time dog. Mark lives at cooperdale Ohio about 10 mile from Coshocton.

I don't know about you but I would MUCH rather pay for $200.00 worth of gas and have a weekend to myself to go meet new folks and see dogs run only to find out a dog didn't suit me than to pay the cost of the dog AND shipping to find out the same thing and be stuck with it. I bet you came out a whole lot cheaper this way.
You did the smart thing by going to watch the dog. It is possible the dog did have the qualities described by the owner but for one reason or another the dog didn't perform (conditions maybe) but then again things like speed and hunt are subject to opinion (you didn't say what the qualities were). I have seen some so called hard hunters just wonder around and seen some dogs with so called poor hunt jump one bunny after another but the owner wanted a more animated hunter. The good thing is you walked away from a dog you didn't want but got to see it for yourself rather than wonder what you missed out on. If the dog had been all that and more, would you still be upset about the trip?

southern beagles, i guess your right in a way. i had thought the same thing at first. what if? the qualities that are in question were. absolutly no HUNT,never jumped a rabbit<4hrs> no DESIRE whatsoever. this dog left the track several times. . when he was tired he would just quit and lay down in the grass even while other dogs ran in close distance from him.maybe he was sick for all i know, not sure. i was promised alot on the phone though. i've seen better to say the least. on the good side of things i really did have fun doing the road trip thing. i just wont go that far to look a dog anymore. i'm more inclined to believe that i passed up more good ones just going to look at him. also, i just wanted to say the owner and his father were really nice people, i have no problem with them at all. maybe i expected a little too much???
I have been on a few of these trip also, so I understand how you feel. I very seldom sell a dog just buy them and then give them away, hard on the wallet but if I don't like them neither will anybody else. 2 weekends ago if somebody had been with me trying to buy one of mine I would have ask 1000.00 each for them, then last weekend all I would have ask for was a free bullet for me or the dogs.

You can be burned even when you see the dog run. I was at a reputable beagler's place once breeding a bitch to his FC. While there he told me he had a young bitch for sale that was too small and thereby too slow for his pack. He told me that he just came from a LPH Trial and she had run six hours and then couldn't take it anymore. He told me if I had doubts I could take her and keep her for six months before I made a decision. Sounded great to me. I took her home and the first time out I was really impressed. She had a great honest mouth and could run a rabbit as good as any dog I had seen. She had some qualities that I doubt I will ever see in another hound. However, she only ran about two hours before she ran out of gas. I was running her with smaller slower hounds.
When I got home I called the guy and told him I liked the dog but I was concerned about her lack of stamina. He assured me she was fine. He said that she had not recovered from the grueling hare trial. She was gaunt and still had the number on her side so I thought that makes sense. I sent him the money and he sent me the papers. I later learned that she had an extreme Kidney disorder. In about a year she died.
I don't think the man knew she was sick. I hated losing the dog more than the money. She was awesome.
