Long hair on Face and Toes
I've owned beagles that grew long hair on the face and toes during the summer, but shed it off later. These dogs were not related and were AKC reg. Has this happened to anyone out there? I wonder if this is related to their diet?
I've heard of (but never seen) "wirehaired Beagles" cropping up on a rare occasion - also have heard many in the sport for several years mention certain bloodlines are more infamous for producing it than others - just don't know exactly which lines those are, lol
Its an uncommon recessive trait & that both sire and dam of the litter must have the gene for it. These are throwbacks to some of the early Beagles in this country.
There were a few different varieties of early Beagles, and "Blue Belle", one of the early Beags in America, was a wirehaired bluetick. I have a pic of her, and she resembles a Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen with a shorter coat & lack of feathering on the ears ...
Anyway, the "New Complete Beagle" has a detailed section on breed history & mentions "At one time, the English Beagles were described as two distinctively different breeds - the rough coated & the smoothe coated".
Your hounds might just have this trait, to a much lesser degree. My guess would be the feed is not causing it, but it could be making the coat slightly thicker or shorter. I'd guess the hair would grow longer on most any feed. JMHO.
