Cull the Superstar?
If you had a dog that consistantly ran faster than the rest of your pack and did everything right but disrupted the run by stringing out the rest of your dogs would you sell him to someone else? Or would you try to get more dogs like him and build a pack of Superstars?

HI TOM.... IT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU LIKE. ARE YOUR OTHER DOGS DOING THE JOB? IS THIS DOG DISRUPTING YOUR PACK ? DO YOU WANT A PACK OF SUPERSTARS OR YOUR IS YOUR OLD PACK OK BY YOU? IT SOUNDS LIKE THIS DOG IS TOO FAST FOR YOUR PACK. IT'S GOING TO BE EASIER ON YOUR WALLET TO SELL ONE THAN TO BUY 3 MORE, BUT IT'S UP TO YOU.

What do you mean by stringing out the rest of the dogs? If he is messing up your chase and causing checks when your dogs normally would not have one it's time to go. Now if you like the faster chase with a few more checks than keep him. Personally I get rid of dogs that cause checks when there should not be one or a regular basis. If the rabbit ran a made a slight turn the check should be only seconds if there is a check at all. If the faster dog blowing by the turn and still going straight it is time for a new home. Just my opinion.
Tom--if you decide to cull the speedster i have some very fine young hounds with top breeding-females and allways looking for a good male with above average speed-some of my females are med fast and i would consider a trade and can swap pedigrees, that is,if you feel you want a more even pack of hounds??I must say it is much harder to create a good fast pack of hounds than it is to put together a more med fast even pack of hounds,in most cases,a very big dissapointment when you care about trialing is to enter a very fast hound that runs to much of the front or runs way ahead of the pack, most judges eliminate this type hound quick.Remember one hound persons cull is anothers treasure,i like those type hounds and one day will get a good one-lol!!!you can e-mail me at animalzone@yahoo.com

No, no I don't have any superstars. I wish I had that problem. A buddy of mine used to have a female like that. She ran a hare like she was running a deer and without a lot of checks. We didn't have anything else that could keep up with her. The other dogs would either end up way behind or just quit and go find their own rabbit to run. I would give my left, well I would love to have a dog like that. I raised three females off her and have one that shows some of her mother's talent from time to time but she will never be as good.
I have read comments by quite a few beaglers that say they would not keep one of these dogs. I just wanted to know what y'all thought.

I never cut from the front, always from the rear!
If a dog can run faster than the others and hold it without doing stupid stuff, but, is just faster footed while doing it, then I think you only have one dog with the rest being ME TOOERS. There is a danger that they might not run without being able to look at his butt and follow his lead.
Rebel, you sure have a great place. Your dogs are lucky to live there!

John=Thank you.I am proud to know someone like you and to run some hounds and extremely proud you are back in action,if not fully you can type and enjoy some of the messenger boards.I have several new additions to the kennel now and some are looking very good.A little male out of FC Indian Hills Trapper 2004 derby that is showing he may make the grade, great confornation, lots of hunt with speed we both like,he had me woundering there for a few days seems he was running himself to exhaustion and i was worried how well he could bounce back, but he is doing well and improving steadily and i have a couple new females you would like--i think??and one of those is a Trapper female, both 13".A new one not here yet is a female from Bob Huffman that i have hight hopes for.I am in hopes by hunting season i can field 6 to 8 hard hitting no none sense rabbit hounds.Take care John.

Send me that dog! I watched Denny's Blue II run in the first round of the Grand Ch. class at the 2002 ARHA LP World Hunt. WoW! Did he make a few enemys! For the first 30 min the judges kept calling time-out, thinking that all of the dogs were on a split and to catch their breath. As a spectator, standing on top of a hill, I had an excellent view of what was going on. Blue did exactly what Tom described above. He strung everything out. Two hounds from PA quit, and started running their own rabbit. Time and time again, the owners would catch their hounds and cut them loose together. It wouldn't be long before Blue would string them out again and again. Yes, he ran the track with them or without them. Mostly without them. He smoked them and won the cast. Later that night I walked past a group of judges and hound owners. From what I gathered they were all complaining about Blue. You see, Blue don't wait for nobody. He can do it all by himself. As most of you know, Blue won the big dance in 2001. Too many people didn't want him to repeat in 2002. This is strictly my opinion.

Tom,
I think I have this problem also. But I have one 2 yr. old and a young
pup that is just started. But you know what, I wouldn't get rid of them. I
would only like to have the chance to see what he could do in a hare
hunt. I'm going to register him ARHA and hope he's as good as his daddy.
He's a duell CH. in UKC and like I said he's mine and I like him.

I agree with Alabama John, If you have a dog that likes the front and can handle the pressure of other hounds and knows the point of loss keep it.. alot of times these faster hounds can cause a loss but be well gone with it again before the others can even get a chance to help in the check work. But like someone else said, If you like this style of hound than keep it. if you don't than get another that suites your needs. I personally love a fast dominate hound. Over running a line is not a serious fault. as long and the hound shuts up and comes back to the point of loss and makes a strong attempt to reclaim the line this is a good one.. I hope this helps. this is just my opinion.
