Iowa rabbit hunting?

Post by Shady Grove Beagles »

What's the buzz about Iowa rabbit hunting?Seems like it's the new hotspot that everybody is talking about. What makes it so? More rabbits then other states? More public land to hunt on?
Every body goes to Maine for hare cause there are alot of them but probably just as important is that there are thousands of square miles of woods to hunt in.
What the pull of Iowa?

i dont know and i live here. I hunt alot in missouri. seems to me alot less habitat than there used to be. alot more deer hunters, alot more houses in the country. There is alot of puplic hunting land but most of it caters to the big timber deer hunters. Thats just my perspective. Alot of places I used to run have been leased uo by deer hunters. Hard to find good hunting during Oct. Nov. Dec. without aggrevating a deer hunter or 2. My friend had a couple nice dogs shot last Nov. by some out of town deer hunters that thought any dogs running game in the fall had to be on deer. It about cost them a truck full of holes when my buddy found out about it the next day when he was looking for them and found them both within a 100 yrd circle of a tree stand both stuck with arrows so I dont even run much till after deer seasons closed anymore. You know how easy it is for beagles to get accross on someone else propeerty when hot on a bunny

I have hunted Iowa for the last 6 years, opting to drive 960 miles one way to go out there. We do really well in southeast Iowa. High Rabbit populations, very little hunting pressure and no competition. I hunt both public and private land also. Territory is very open in spots and rabbits will really stretch out and run. We typically run from the time we drop the tailgate until we catch the dogs. 20 rabbits a day is pretty easy to do. I have also found most farmers very hunter friendly.
