Great Run, But Not a Happy Ending !

Post by Plowboy »

I got in a mess today , The dogs ran good all morning, finally had some good hard races, about 8 rabbits jumped with 6 or so hours running.
Sun finally broke out & dogs started heating up & I was thinking about catching them during a bad check, when my Jett female went to squalling, she has a machine gun chop so this was unusaul. I ran up to where she was & she was rolling like she was having a seizure or fit of some kind.
The other dogs were flying away in all directions, I finally got my hands on her & there were, I would guess 25 or more Yellow Jackets on her. I finally got them beat off her & me. We both ran for the truck, long story short, she threw up a couple times but seems to be fine this evening & I got 9 stings out of the deal but I am not allergic to anything like that.(Thank goodness, only thing I am allergic to is work)
Them things are bad around here this year, thats the 3rd nest I have been in this summer.
Watch for them thangs when in the woods,
Plowboy

Cuz, I'm glad you didn't have Lil Plow (don't like using young'ns names) with you , he would of been in that mess and that many stings might have been hard on him. Glad you and Jett are OK
I dropped mine out about 6am this morning in a good drizzling rain, only jumped 4,but 1 run 2 hrs and 10 mins , the others run anywhere from 1/2 hr to 1 hr , so I aint complaining. My hounds had the front the whole time(lol)

I hate to bring this up now but this is probably a good time to learn from a tragedy. Recently my freind Mr. Bill Sorrow lost his best friend to what started off to be a single bee/wasp/hornet sting? Mr. Oliver Bill's friend had been cutting grass for a man he worked for only because he loved to work. He approached a couple of more of the guys that worked for this man and asked them if it looked like he had been stung somewhere behind the ear but not on the ear. They told him yes. Mr. Oliver failed to tell them he was allergic to stings of such and drove off on the mower towards his personal truck where he thought he had a shot for the sting. (turns out no shot was in truck) A few minutes later the other guys saw him laying on the ground beside the mower and he never got to the truck. It was only after a couple of phone calls that they found out he was allergic to stings and by the time it was all over Mr. Oliver sadly had had a heart attack and died. The exacts of this tragedy will never be known but be careful out there and if you are allergic to stings carry a shot!
Glad everything worked out for you Plowboy. :) Wayne

On the good side, if you or the dog have arthritis, it won't bother you for a while. If not allergic, sure does loosen up the joints.

Always carry tobacco to wet and put on the stings.

When it comes to yellow jackets it's every man or dog for himself. Advice: Don't run into the wind when yellow jackets are after you they can track you. I've had them chase me and the dogs a hundred yards or further. I don't think any bee or wasp sting is as painful as a yellow yacket.

Glad to hear you and Jett both are alright. Stuff like that takes alot out of man and beast both in this humid heat. I was fortunate enough to spot a couple of black hornets nest built low to the ground before me or one of the dogs got in them. Ol'Aces probably would've got a kick out of seeing me out run the dogs with my bad foot.

Good but sad story Wayne, Not saying this gentleman didn't tell of this allergy for this reason, but some of us "HE" men never tell our runn'n / hunt'n partner these kinda of personal things about ourselves. We shoud ,
I want the guy I'm hunting with to know these things. God forbid something
happen , but by knowing it could and has saved life's.
I'm like Terry , about the only thing I 'm allergic to is work !! lol

My old beagle was allergic to yellow jacks. I have had a hate on ever since for them. Had to take Krunch to the vet twice in anaphylactic shock. She's gone now but I still hate those things. When it is hot and dry, like this year, we get a lot of them late August into September.

I also nursed a girl once that had a bee sting. I will never forget her, in a coma. Don't know how long she lived after I left that job. Better to go quick than live a vegetable. IMO

I have had some problems with yellow jackets in the past here at home and at a couple places where i run at. I took care of them by doing what my papaw told me. Look for their hole in the ground and then come back at night. They wont come out at night, so take you some gas and pour down in the hole and u can hear them being burnt up. A 16oz bottle should be plenty. I hope your dog and you get better over this and I hope you kill ever last single one of them.

We use crude oil to kill them, just dump it down the hole, the fumes (natural gas) stay for a long time, killes them quick.
