Male won't mount

I am trying to breed my female and she started showing last Saturday. I waited for 1 week and got the male and put them together. She is ready for him but he will not mount her. All he does is lick her. She will turn for him, he will sniff and lick her then just walk away. He is 2 years old so age isn't the problem but this is his first exposure to a female in heat. Any ideas to make him mount her? Will it just come naturally after a day or 2?

Frank... Some males are like that when they've never bred a dog. First question though is, is she "flagging" for him? If so then she's definitely ready. Perhaps giving him some competition will persuade him to be further interested. In other words, if you have another male put him in there with her and the male you want to bred her at the same time. It may not work, but at least worth the try.

You'd think those silly males would be good and ready. After all, most of them spend their first year and a half practicing on each other.

Try taking him out for a run aout 30 to 45 minutes & bring him home & put in pen with her. Sometimes males will get in the mood when the adrenaline is flowing.
If that doesn't work, let him watch 15 minutes of a good skin flick & see if he gets tore up. (just kidding about this part)
Sometimes to get a young male started you might have to take matters into your on hands, if you know what I mean.

Make sure there's not an older or more dominant male in the kennel intimidating him. If you suspect that, he may be more willing to breed her in a more neutral place. We were lucky enough to have a stud sent to us one time. The owner came along and we hunted a couple of days. Our female was ready but he just messed around like you described. The owner had to get back home so we sent the female with him. That dog no more than had his feet on his home territory and had her bred twice.

We are a predominantly male kennel here so I imagine the intimidation factor coupled with the "this is not my territory" factor probably hampered that male from breeding here. Just a thought.

It could be she's not quite ready yet; he can tell by her smell. It also could be he needs a little encouragement. If he walks away leash him up and bring one of your other males in where he can see him near the female.

Another problem if the male is in a strange place he won't act interested,but take him to his pad with her and she if he likes her better.

I agree with Plow... it sounds crazy but i have seen a guy who has done alot of breeding in his days take things in his own HANDS to get the male encouraged.. I have never had this problem with any of my stud dogs but i have seen it done.. It works... I have personally had good luck with kenneling the bitch in the kennel next to the male for a few hours then releasing the two together..but this is different if they are kenneled together always...

Make sure you have the right day. Wait until the 11th day and try her for 3 days running. It is best if the stud is in his own kennel where he lives. He will breed quicker if he is in his own pen ect. Try to do it when it is cool. If he acts interested but won't breed her, feed him 1/3 to 1/2 half his regular dinner and then try him again right after that. Some first time studs are inhibited by you as the dominant pack member. Reassure him all along the way by petting him and sweet talking him for his aggressive breeding behavior. If he is an experienced stud, a lot won't even try until she is in for sure and ready. An old pro will just sniff and walk away if it is too soon. Good luck!
