Branko`s Big Leroy Brown
Haredog,
Steve Corey saw this hound when he was young and he also bred a bitch to him. I contacted AKC awhile ago and they have records of Leroy placing second twice once with 35 hounds and once with 37 hounds. Leroys picture at 14 1/2 years old can be seen on Branko`s web site under champions without titles. I contacted Steve Corey about Leroy and he had very good things to say about him. As you know I now own a son of Leroy and he is a super clean hound who can run a hare fast with out cutting and swinging. I garrantee that you will have the chance to see him run and even hunt with him and I know you will like him. What I have been told and what I have seen from Leroy`s offspring with my own eyes Leroy must have been a fine hound, to bad his first owner stopped trialing him.

Leroy Brown spent most of his life about 20 miles from me. His owner put him in a few trials and even though Leroy showed well, Don always thought trials were fixed and never went back. Leroy was a very nice hound, not a rough bone in his body and very steady. Don didn't want to breed him to anything he didn't approve of, so Leroy never bred much. I bred the litter sister to my IFC to him, and one of the pups turned out to be one of the finest snow hounds I've ever seen, but unfortunately he died at about 2 years old from an accident. I kept one male who was very hard to start and although he was fine with me, he was always terrified of strangers. I set out to put him down on several occasions but always liked the dog's personality so decided to just keep him around as a house dog. There was another shy one in the litter and a couple of average dogs, so in whole, the litter was nothing special despite the one outstanding hound in the litter who, in my opinion was better than Leroy. I don't lay the shyness on Leroy but this cross brought shyness out in 2 pups out of the 5 or 6 in the litter. I know of several other crosses to Leroy that showed no shyness so again, I don't fault him. The female I bred to him produced a couple of other shy ones in 4 other breedings, so the fault could well have come from her. When Don got out of beagling, he sold Leroy and two other Branko males to a friend of mine in southern Maine. All three of these males were from early Branko crosses that can no longer be duplicated. Branko himself ended up with Leroy and I don't know if the dog is still alive or not but he'd be quite old if he is indeed still alive. I still have the shy male off him and he's now 9. A beautifully built dog. With the right bitches, I think Leroy could have produced some excellent hounds; too bad he never got the opportunities.
Branko`s Big Leroy Brown
Branko just resently put Leroy and Ali Baba down I think Leroy was 16 years old. There are 2 Leroy Brown males in my area that are placing in some trials and I have my Leroy male which I purchased from Branko as a pup. My male runs well in snow and colder temps, he is very friendly and not shy at all. He is very smart and handles like a dream, he is tough as nails. I too will never let this hound go. I was told by a few very experienced trialers to take it slow with my male and give him time to mature, Branko told me this also. My hound will be 3 in May and he is going to see quite a few trials this season.

Thunder, I knew Branko got several litters off him so it was good that Leroy was able to finally produce some pups; and that they were bred by the originator of the bloodline himself is a big plus. I wonder if Jim Bungay ever got anything off Leroy. My hunting buddies and I often talk about that great hound I got off him and what a tragedy it was to lose him. At a year and a half old he had more sense than most hounds I've seen and was steady as a rock no matter what the conditions. He was only in two trials- a sanctioned Large Pack where he took 4th out of about 40 big males at about a year old, and a licensed 4th in SPO Hare out of 44 hounds at about 14 months. His greatest moment though came one January day while hunting when the hare he was running decided to jump into a tidal river and swim to the other side- about 50 yards distance. He leaped right in the frigid water and swam to the other side- hardly missing a beat. We had to rush back to the trucks and drive around to the other point to get back in the chase. One of the most bizarre and impressive moments I've seen in beagling. Hard to guess what he'd have accomplished had he lived.
Leroy Brown
Steve,
Jim has 2 males out of Leroy and Bon one has a second or 2 and maybe a first also I think they are 4 years old.
One day I had my male out he chased a hare across a frozen pond about half way across he broke through he started swimming ,smashing the ice with his front paws and when he got to the other side he had a little shake and carried right on like nothing happen. Another day in the spring I was running with a few freinds and the hounds lost the hare when it crossed the road my male was searching the road and another hound hit the trail about 100 feet in the woods but there was a large puddle about 2 feet deep between the hounds, most of the hounds ran around the water, but not my male he took a B line straight at the hound that had opened right through the water hit the line and hammered on. I ran him a few days ago it was quite cold with deep snow with a 1/2 in of icy crust on it and a little dry powder on top. He ran the hare steady but was a fair distance behind it. I got a look at the hare but not enough to take a shot and it turned a headed back into the swamp I watched my male giving chase and he was breaking through the crust every second step. I saw him streched right out on his belly pulling with his front legs and still opening on the trail. I let him go for about 2 hours but never got another look at the hare and when I got him on the leash he howled like crazy he just did not want to give up.
My male is out of Leroy and a Sassy Sally bitch so I do not know who passed what genes but this fella has got some heart.

Bruce, been meaning to get a message to you but I've had a lot going on. The fellow who works for me has given notice and I'm scrambing to find a replacement for him. I won't have a day off til I do. Had a fellow coming down to breed to Mac but haven't heard from him. Got out yesterday on this fresh snow and had a good day. Dogs ran super for the first time since the last snow. Lots of hare around here but in some THICK woods. We killed only three but they ran nonstop all day. Thunder, bring that big male of yours down to Sunrise so I can get a look at him. I'm judging at Fundy but don't know what classes.
