how do you go about reading a pedgree? is it like a family tree?

Yes. Exactly what it it. That would be a 3 generation pedigree on "Georgia" which include parents, grandparents & great grandparents, speaking in family tree terms I'd imagine. The CH in front of the name is an AKC Show Champion Title.
