Melanson's Fareast Sprocket
Can anyone tell me why you hear so much about Ranger Dan but not much on Sprocket? I believe they were siblings and both IFC. What was the difference?
Ranger Dan & Fareast Sprocket
I saw both these dogs trialed and they both impressed me.I would say the main reason you hear more about Ranger Dan is he was always around here where Fareast Sprocket spent alot of time far from here out of state.Once Tom Sharpe bought Ranger Dan he hunted and advertized him alot. They are littermates.Sincerly haredog
I judged the pair several times in Canada before they came to the states. I think Sprocket took 2 out of 3. Keep in mind that this was running in the wild, where getting a good look at the hounds was not as easy as in the pens with trails and more open woods. I thought Sprocket could hit a bit harder than Dan and reached a bit on the checks, where Dan was very close on check. This is splitting hairs though as there wasn't a lot to distinguish the two and their voices were nearly identical. Sprocket had a head start on Dan for the IFC title. He was nearly finished before Dan came south and Dan put the heat on him in the very first trial they went head to head again. It was at Waterville (ME) in the pouring rain and Dan won by outchecking Sprocket and all the rest. This was a great pair of hounds and if you include the older sister Lucy from an earlier breeding, one of the great crosses made in the last decade.
FTC Sullivan's Lucky Lucy lacked 4 points for her AKC title, even though her last 4 trials at 8 years old she took 4 NBQ's. She also placed third in the AKC LP Nationals one year. Lucy was owned by Charlie Butterfield at the time. Charlie wasn't interested in pups and was more interested in finishing her than breeding her. He tried to breed her to one of my males but she didn't take- too late in her cycle. She had been bred in Canada but I don't recall if it was once or twice. Charlie sold her at 9, I believe. I never found out what became of her after that. Lucy was a 15" bitch and as good on snow as anything I've seen. She double scored the second place hound in a trial at Sunrise in near blizzard conditions.
