What is the very first thing I should be doing in preparing my dog to hunt in the field, she is a little over 4 months old.
Teach her basic obedience. You really would like her to come back when called. 
Once she is good with that take her out to an area where there are rabbit and let instinct do it's thing. It may take lots of trips out but she will eventually get going.
I would invest in an e-collar. It is the easiest way to keep her in the same county you're in if she decides to run a deer.
