Deaton's Black Magic

Post by nehelt »

I was wondering if anyone has heard of this Beagle? I am looking for some info on him, pictures or anything for that matter. I have talked to some rabbit hunters that have heard of him but thats all I can get from them.

I am pretty sure you must be talking about Deaton's Black Magic. Pretty good medium speed dog from what I heard but I never saw him run personally.

I bought a 3-4 yr. old female off a guy where I live and he told me that she came from what I thought was Deacon's but I must have misunderstood him. She is dynamite on rabbits which is all that matters to me. She is about 13" there an about, maybe a tad smaller. She is almost all black and brown with very little if any white on her.

Black Magic

Post by mrwvsportsman »

I have a male that is about 18 months now his grandfather is Deaton's Black Magic on top and bottom. Best young dog I have ever owned. Only complaint is he is a little loose mouthed. Great on a check gets 90% of them out of my pack. Also have a bitch about a year old. Grandfather is Deaton's on top and Trapper on bottom. She is starting to come along very well also. Tighter mouthed than my male. Runs a great line. Very happy with both.

mrwvsportsman,
Loose mouthed is what I've seen off of Magic's offspring. I raised a male pup off of Magic and a Cress female, he will bark going to the dogs, in the check area, and pop off out of place. After I got rid of him, he did make ARHA LP RCH. Just too loose for my liking.

Cress

Post by mrwvsportsman »

I noticed a couple guys with Magic and Cress breeding. What Cress dog was it? I had a female out of Cress's Scotty and Ready Red and sold her. Worst mistake I have ever made. She was the best jump dog I have ever owned and a good honest mouth. I would like to have a good Magic/Cress bred dog.

I borrowed Magic when George Anderson owned him and bred a nice female to him. I kept a male and a female from the litter. They will be 3 this summer. Both a nice running hounds, with good line control and big voices. The female can pop off occasionally, but not bad. The male was a little too conservative early on, but has been coming on strong lately.

I judged Magic twice in SPO licensed trials. He was a super dog and won both trials. He made the wild, crazy dogs look silly by out-nosing and out-checking them. He was the kind of dog a gunner would love and the rabbits would fear.

Have a male out of him, he is 5 1/2 yrs. Best jimp dog I ever had. He is a little mouthy in the check, but he will get it done. Throwing some nice looking pups, that is starting early. Wouldn't sell him for any thing
