I have a 1/4-acre starting pen right in my back yard. I’ve got chain link fence up with heavy gauge chicken wire ran around it with an apron. I have several bushes and blue spruce trees in my yard for cover, but there still isn’t enough. My 4-month old pups are just getting to many site chases. I have raised the blade on my mower as high as it will go now. In about one more week I’ll attempt to cute the grass. I was going to leave the grass as high as I can and still be able to cute it one I get the pups all started. I was considering leaving clump of grass about 10’ square to give a little more cover. Does anyone have any other suggestions that might give the area more cover without being unsightly since it is my back yard and I do live in a residential area?

run your pups after dark this way they cant see the rabbits,,,,,,,

A pen that small would only work for young pups and ... nope,no joke CHH

a pen that small and fenced in you would not have to worry about deer running them at night makes then you all there nose and no more sight chasing in the summer months from around June till end of August i run my dogs after dark it is cooler and makes them work harder hope this helps you out

guest,,,,,,,no i wasnt joking if your dogs are running by sight , run them at night so they have to use thier nose not thier eyes,,,,,kinda like you shooting at a target in the daylight,,,,,,shoot at it in the dark and you will have to use your sences,,,dont know why you thought that was a joke,,,,

We don't cut the grass in ours. it creates natural habitat. We also have put in a couple of brush piles. It helps to teach the pups to 'dig in' and find the rabbits

im pretty sure dogs can see at night also thats why they thought it was a joke

I also run at night and you still get sight chases, fox and coyotes hunt at night and I'm sure they have good night vision.

They always told me that if an animals eyes reflect light in the dark, then they have the ability to see after dark. Such as deer, dogs, cats, coons and so on. Maybe I was misinformed.

Try cutting the grass in irregular pattern, it's not your lawn after all this would give some cover for the rabbits. throw christmas trees out there aswell.
