insulating a dog house ???

Post by ddetar00 »

I know this has been discussed as in WHAT TO INSULATE WITH... my question is "Do I Insulate ?"

The advantage is obvious for the winter months... but in the summer months?
If the house is insulated would that not hold the heat in and make it miserable for the hound?
Thinking of the attick in the summer, due to the insulation and low air movement it is terribly hot.

Looking for your thoughts as I am building kennel houses this weekend and am trying to determine
this issue.

Thanks
Dennis

I'd say NO. you live in ARK. if you lived in Mich then YES I would. I like to use 3/4 inch thick wood though as sort of insulation if you want to call it that. In the winter up here in MO I just fill the box up with straw atleast 6" deep. they nest in there put 2dogs per box. Mine are fine. When it gets extra cold pile more dogs in put more straw.

that ios kinda how I looked at it... the plastic 55 gal barrel with straw has done well for years....
but seeing as I was in the construction mode I fugured I may as well look at the possibilities

I got something in mind that will be the best of both seasons....
wil post pics this weekend when completed....

BTW... we are optomistic that we are going to get the new machines... which will allow for the entire front of the
hat... your design will be more possible at that point!!!! :approve:

we will just be broke for the next five years or so

I used the blue foam insulation that comes in the 4x8 sheets, because if you us the regular batting it will hold fleas and you will never get rid of them. Insulation is supposed to keep the warm air in the winter, and keep it cooler in the summer. Just like the inside of your house.

Hounds like to layout in the air in Summer. As long as they have shade, an old wooden cable spool with a plywood top and a couple of the hub boards knocked out as a doorway will keep them happy.
A low wooden bench in your covered kennel will become their favorite place to layout during most of the year... ;)

My doghouses are Insulated . 1/2 " plywood inside & out, with 1 1/2" thick insulation. In the winter, I pack it with straw with an old rug over the door. In the summer, I pull out all the straw, & put in a carpet sample & maybe an old towel. They don't need much in the summer. They can lay on top of the doghouse, in the doghouse, or on a bench I built for them. It's about a foot off the kennel floor. They can catch a breeze that way.
