kennel question?? what to build

Post by bluecollar beagler »

im getting ready to start on a kennel but i need some opinions... if given the choice and price doesnt matter ! would you build your kennel on concrete or treated lumber and why????? ive had guys tell me after having them on concrete that they would build on lumber next time and ive also been told that the lumber will absorb the smell and it will stink after a few years.... any of you guys have any advice????

Off the ground kennels are the way to go. I have both right now and have seen many others.
Here are some things to think about......
With off the ground kennels your worm and flea/tick problems will a lot less. This is the biggy. Plain and simple, your hounds will be healthier in off the ground kennels, In a off the ground kennels you will have to trim toe nails more often. I have a lot less skin problems in hounds kept in off the ground kennels. Concrete holds a lot of germs. Repairs are generally easier and cheaper for off the ground kennels and can be easily moved around if needed to. Theses are just a few things to think about before building. Best of luck on your new project reguardless which kennel you chose to build.

above ground for me........check out some of my builds. I like them. If well built they will last. Yes its wood and will get chewed on. Build it so it can also be easily repaired if need be. Put up as much chew proofing you can. I like to use alum angle for that. Drill a couple holes in it and fasten with roofin nails. I also feel that above ground kennels are safer for the dogs as far as them getting out on you. They can't climb up it and get out cause its a cage unlike a ground pen without a roof where a dog can climb the fence and get out. You can go about your business not think twice bout coming home and finding your dog not in the kennel. ANd yeah just like hounddog says you have to trim nails more often. thats true I do that all the time. But I don't mind it. I like to cut em anyway to keep them well groomed.

I just poured a concrete pad. 16x32 to set my dog kennels on. I like these set up alot better. I think the dogs have more room and easy to clean and maintain. spray off and use some bleach water every now and then to clean if you want. I have 3 of the 10x10 chainlink kennels, I put a piece of 4in pvc along the back side of my concrete, cut a section out so I could spray my dog waste into the pipe and then wash it down into a 90 than turns and runs to the drain ditch. Now I need to set my posts and put my metal roof on so they will have shade and keep the rain, snow and bad weather off them. just my opinion. I would say sometimes off ground would be better maybe if you lived in a place where houses were everywhere and need to conserve on space. I am going to build an offground to whelp pups in one day, but that will be awhile. best of luck, Nate

the more i think about it and trying to find a place on the farm to put it with water access and electric for lighting im leaning more and more toward pouring the concrete and making it beside my garage instead of on the hill with the stables...
hopefully if my work picks up and i dont have to worry about getting laid off ill pour it this fall and build it .. otherwise ill have to wait this economy out and hopefully do it next year...
