I started on my new above ground kennel this past weekend. It measures 4ft wide and 10ft long. I'm not that good at building things but I'm trying my best to make it as nice as I am able to.

I will be posting pictures as I build it. This kennel will be replacing the one in the background.

Here is what I have done so far.

Image

I notched the oak 3/4 deep and the width of the board for the flooring. Oak is tuff to cut thru. They are space 1-3/4

Image

This is 1x1 deck rail spaced 1-1/2 apart

Image

I made some support pieces on the miter saw cut a 45 degree angles

Image

I have worked on this thing for three days straight. Roughly 8 hours each day. Here is what I have so far as of 6-03-2008

This is a small storage compartment I built into the upper house.

I am going to keep a spray bottle with deoderizer in it. Also trash bags for waste. I can also put collars and leads in there. Behind that wall is another 20inchs of what I call shelf space also a nice spot to where a dog can lay on before going down the stairs.

here is the back view. I made a door so I can get into the house.

that ramp was a little tricky but I got it done.

self feeder still needs to be attached. That is where it will go.

thanks. I'm trying my best.

Also trying to build it on a budget. I got all that wood from the scrap pile at my work. Those oak 3x4's yes 3x4's I measured them are used for skids that hold heavy sheets of steel. They are 8ft long. I got them for free. Can't beat that. I bought the flooring. Those 1x1 deck rails were $1.30 each. The 1x4x8 boards were $2.77 each. I then cut them to size.

Now I have to start building up. Make some doors and buy some plywood. I already notched the ends of the base so that I can screw into it for better support.

I started pricing wire. It is expensive $40 bucks a roll around here.

I understand about building on a budget. We get alot of parts (robots, cylinders, rollers, ect.) on perfectly good wood. Keep those scrap passes rolling and save a bundle of money.

You'll love the slat floor. Tractor supply is where I bought my wire. If you'll build the top part 24" tall by 48" wide you can go all the way around and on top of the run with just 1 roll minus the door in the run. I just built my framework out of treated 2X4 and skinned everything with cedar fence slats (fairly cheap) and very durable. One of mine is about 5 years old and I've not had to touch it. Looks like you have a good start.

That's a good idea on the wire. I have a rural king nearby. I'll have to stop by and check it out.

I've be debating on the hieght of the run. The kennels I have now are 28inches tall. Plenty of room above the dogs head. I wanted to shorten it up some maybe 25 inches tall. I don't know yet.

Thanks...I'm going to try and have it done by this weekend.

I'll have more pics when it's in place with some gun-dogs relaxing in their new penthouse.

Very nice. Have the dogs went up too the penthouse yet? What do you do clean up the waste daily?

I clean under there every other day. I put the waste in a bucket that has a trash bag in it along with a lid. I then leave it for the trash man take twice a week.
