I've used lots of different houses over the years and you can't beat a good plastic barrel. I've made several different designs but I like this one the best. I can purchase enough material for $150.00 to built six houses. This includes the barrels, 2 x 8 planks for the legs, 2 x 4 planks for the top rails, 3/4 plywood for the sun deck, 1/2 plywood for the inside floor, 1 x 6 decking planks for the walkways and all the hardware. For $25.00 you won't find a better house. You don't have to put the inside floor in but I use a 14" piece across the bottom because I drill holes in the bottom to allow any water from condensation or other wise to drain out. This keeps the bedding good and dry.

How do you attach the "rain" shield to the front of the barrel? What do you use as a shield?

What do you attach the legs and platform with - screws, nails?

I have some barrels and would like to use these as a guide.

Thanks

The rain shield is made from the bottom of a barrel. It takes three barrels to make two houses. I attach the shield to the house with three 1/4" by 1" bolts. I use a 5/16" by 4 " bolt to go all the way though the 2 X 8 legs. I use a wood bit to recess the hole where the nut goes that way it don't touch the ground. You can turn it the other way but then you have the nut and washer sticking up inside the house. I then take two 5/16" lag screws and put one near the top edge of each side of the leg. These I also srew down from the inside. This way if you don't want to use the plywood floor the bolt and screw heads won't hurt the dogs when they lay on them. Just a little bedding and they don't even know they're there. I do the top rails the same way but you may not won't to add the sun deck on top. I use the rain shield for my pattern to cut my legs and top rail. To make the rain shield cut the bottom 1/3 off a barrel then make two sections with it and shape it to suit your needs. After you do one the next one is easy! I've been doing this for years and I also make one that I don't use any wood just make it completely out of barrels. I use the top half of the barrel I cut my rain shield from to cut my platform for my barrel then use 1/4" by 3/4 bolts to secure then together. I like them when I use them on the ground because you don't have to worry about anything rotting away after several years. But I don't like them as well in the kennel because I can't wash under them. I hope you can make some sense out of what I written. I'm OK at building but not to good on directions some times. :D

Here's another pic so maybe you can go by these and make you some cheap house that do a really good job at keep your dog dry and warm.

If you decide to use make the sun deck make sure it is no wider than your base. It is even better if it just a little smaller.

You can make your own much cheaper. I bought one of the Dog Dens a few years ago and was very disappointed with it. It was a pain to assemble, some of the fastener holes didn't match up on it and it leaked when it rained. Poor design in my opinion.
