Straw is your best choice for warmth and insulation. should be changed out about once a month as the straw breaks down and lowers the insulation properties.

Blankets I guess are OK but, dogs tend to drag them out and play with them or chew them up and they get dirty quickly. I use shavings but, my kennel is heated.

I agree, straw is the most economical and effective bedding for keeping the hounds warm. And boy do they love it when they get new straw in their boxes, it's like christmas! LOL!

I like pure bermuda grass hay, it is not nearly as course as straw & if the right quality, will have no stems & feels soft as silk when the dogs get through making a bed in it & with my ice cream hounds, comfort is a must!!

Straw works well. I've even put a layer of carpet on the bottom for the cold months w/ straw on top.
