Hi all,

When I built my kennel I was trying to watch the pennies. Now I've gotten tired of the mud and mess and want to do something with the dirt floor. I'm going to dig out a good bit of dirt and put in rock. I was thinking about 4-6 inches of 57s then 3-5 inches of 10s on top. What did those with rock floors use? Are these the right sizes to use? The runs are side by side and 8'x16'. Thanks for any info, R.D.

Some people on this site use pee gravel . It looks really nice and it should be real easy on your dogs feet .

I use wood shave'ns .. like the ones for horse stalls... easy shovel clean up .. does not cost like concrete Shovel out... put more in... works well for me .. been usen it since I was a kid (thanks dad)

I had pea gravel before and have rock dust now. I'd def. recommend rock dust. Here in Northern VA it's $13-15/ton and this is "expensive". I'll try to get you a couple pics today. What I'd recommend is dig out a couple inches of dirt, put down a couple inches of crusher run as a base, then 2-4" of rock dust. I did 3 10'x10' kennels for $75.

I am going to give my opinion here because this is what I did last year "trying to watch pennies". My ground is VERY solid to start with. I bought bags of gravel mix from lowes. I put some treated landscape timbers in a 8x8 square and poured the mix into it. it is only a couple inches thick. I put pipe with a 90 looking up and sloped the floor to it and
drain it out in the woods. I can wash it down very easy, no fuss. I dont know how many years it will last but it did not crack so far.I have an old tin roof so it stays cool in summer. I am thinking about an above ground kennel with a poured floor like they do a parking garage. I need somthing for my new pups. I am a fan of concrete and it can be done fairly cheep, for what you get.But i am just an old red neck and it does not need to look fancy just work well.even if you only poured half for now. Good luck
