I had read in another thread that cedar chips are bad for your beagles . I would like to hear what some more of our members think about this and what would be the very best summer & winter beddings ?

Only bad for pups because they choke, or have the chip block the intestinal tract.
My dogs have cedar chips all year long in their dog houses.
I some times use straw during the winter because fleas aren't as abundant.

I use pine shavings as the Cedar smells too strong and I feel its not good for the dogs resperatory system. Apparently though many people use it. I just choose the white pine.

i tried cedar and it made my dogs eyes very red and just seem like they were allergic to it.. ive switched to pine and it seems to do well. covers up the dog smell and seems to keep them really warm

Where can you buy the pine chips from ???

You can buy regular pine bedding at any feed store. Large bales for about 7.00 which are used for horse stalls. you can get the smaller ones at wal-mart for 5.00 which I buy quite often. They are very compacted. I also use a product called Zix which is a zeolite mineral that neutralizes the ammonia in urine under my pine shavings. This is absolutely safe for the dogs and non-toxic.

Cedar shavings/chips and straw here also.

I buy cedar ribbons from Lion Country - not cheap but last without breaking down & OK for pups - works good

i use pine straw

Cedar chips in my dog box and dog houses. In the winter I use the cedar chips as a base and put Hay in for added warmth..Dogs smell great and no fleas if changed every two weeks..I also give my dogs a Flea & Tick medicated shampoo dip once a month.. Coats are gorgous and dogs look and feel like a million bucks...

I am anxiously waiting for my Seneca Kenels to be built...Then I plan on using pine shavings along with a light bulb heater in the winter and then just pine shavings in the warmer months...I also use Sevin Dust %5 to help keep fleas and other parasites off the hounds and out of the boxes.
If i didnt have the new kennels then i would use barley starw ( if avaiable ) or wheat or oats straw and plenty of it.

Pine Shavings from Walmart in the $5.00 bag.

I just placed the pine shavings into my new Senecas! I also like to use Sevin Dust along with the pine shavings....
I dont use any cedar shavings or chips due to the natural oils in the cedar wood causing irritations to the hounds..whether it be respiratory or skin.

I know that many folks use the cedar...but I would rather not take the chance.....an ounce of prevention....well...hopefully you know the rest...
