I keep my hounds on the ground and use lime. It works good for me. I still have a little smell but it would be alot worse without it.

I keep mine on the ground. I shovel every day. Every 2 or three months I use a small tiller and mix in some powdered lime. When ever I can get them I cover the ground with hardwood planer shavings. One of my co-workers has a wood working shop and brings me his clean shavings. Oak and walnut last okay but cyprus lasts the longest. The shavings help dry out the turds quicker and soak up moisture. If you use too much lime it hardens up like cement thats why I like to till the ground up once in a while.

I have dirt pens and use Hydrated lime, not the agricultural lime. This is the kind you can sprinkle on a dead cow and it will eat it up. Only eats dead stuff, will not hurt live tissue.
It will eat up anything dead including poop. It will desolve and disapear into the soil when it rains. NO SMELL.

My kennel floor is made of granite dust, about 8 inches deep. It packs well especially after a hard rain. The droppings are easy to pick up with a stable rake and a garden hoe. Once a month I bleach the floors with 16 oz of bleach mixed with 5 gallons of water. I mix it in the water containers which become clean and disinfected in the process.
At my puppy kennel which is in a sub-division I use a product called Creolin. Mixed with water, I spray this after I pick up the droppings. It eliminates all odors. Wear gloves because it will get on you and stay a while.

I clean my pens everyday and when that is not enough to keep the smell down, I spray the pens down with Oder-Ban. You can find it at Wal-Mart.
