just curious how everyones barrels are holding up for dog houses. mine aren't doing so well they just can't handle being out in the weather there already starting to breakdown and rot. ive just had them about 6 months.

What kind are you using? I`ve had some for 3 years now and not a sign of wear or breaking down. I`m building new kennels now and plan to use them on this one also. What was in them before you used them for the dogs?

I've got a white one that is showing some weather cracks, that I moved in under the kennel roof, but the blue ones are looking as new. I can tell some barrels are heavier plastic than others though...
We cut a 14"X34" piece of plywood to lay in the bottom of the barrels to keep the hounds off any moisture that may form or blow in and drill 4- 1/2" holes in the down side for drains, just incase... ;)

these are 35gallon barrels that have had olives in them. they seemed to be pretty thick and ive used them for feed barrels for years to store dog food and horse food but there breaking down quick out side.

I ALWAYS get the blue ones if I have a choice. Some of mine are from the early 80's and they do not look much different today except for a little fading and a few chews and scratches. I was pondering the other day just how long it would take for them to completely degrade. They will be around long after we are all dead and gone for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My experience is that the translucent white ones will get brittle like the 5 gallon buckets of similar material. The softer type plastic will last FOREVER!

Isn't there static in those barrels.
