Opinions on kennel project

Post by BOOMHOWER »

I'm thinking of building and insulating a shed around 10x12 and connecting above ground pens to it with the dog houses inside the shed. Also I'd like some input on building a exercise pen around 50x50. I am thinking of making it out of chainlink or vinyl coated welded wire. What do you think is more cost effiecient, how long will each last, other suggestions on fencing, size, ect. I currently have one dog but I'm looking for a couple more. THANKS for any input

I've built my third & last kennel & exercise run. Built all out of chain link non vinyl wire. It holds up well. No problems except when have puppies. Two out of nine have managed to get head stuck in wire when about 6 wks old. Made all fences 6ft tall because I found out the hard way that beagles can climb out of shorter structures. Attached 2x4 wire to bottom of fence & turned it down under ground when had dogs on dirt. now have on concrete. Use tension wire on botton to prevent them from crawling under fence.

Hey Boomhower
I built me one of those danged ol kennels for my dogs man!. (Excuse the pun) Instead of sectioning mine off I left it open, guess you would call that a lot. Anyway, I used 5' chain link fence and made it 18'x30', in the bottom I'm laying cap blocks simply because there's no way possible to get a truck behind my house to pour a concrete floor, plus I'm getting the cap blocks cheap. I built a single room box/house so the dogs are always together, should be warmer on them in the winter months, as for the spring and summer months I constructed it so the front wall opens to allow air to circulate. Also in the gable end I put a small door so I can have storage room for supplies. I hope to add a shed roof over the entire lot in the near future and have water and electricity ran also, hope this gives you some ideas.
