Post by DismalSwampdog »

What type of fencing are people using for starting and running pens? Vynl or galvanized? Chicken wire or the 2x4 wire like fox pens ? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! :D

2X4 wire is to big for rabbits.
The beagle netting(chicken wire) is best. Plastic coated if money is not an object. I coated some galvanize wire with thinned down roof coating and it's still on the chicken lot but alot of the coating is gone and the wire is rusty but it's been over dozen years ago. I could probably take a roller and paint on the coating again as the 17 ga wire still seems to be not easily broken. A couple of my corner post have rotted off at the ground so I've driven a couple of galvanized pipe into the ground to hold them up for the time being.

Take all post and dip/paint them in roof coat, steel and wood will rust/rot at ground level so this is where you need the post protected at. Put in your cover rootwads/logstops before you close it in, unless you got a big gate to carry it in through. I stabilized the netting by putting 3 strands of high tension wire round the pen, one at top/midddle and one at ground level(keeps critters from going under and hold apron on ground. That high tension wire just won't rust, still looks like new

Best of luck with yur pen... ;)

Dismal, I put a a small runnin pen back in the mid 90"s about 4acers i used galvanized chicken wire that i bought at fleet farm( like tractor supplyco.) I think it was 72in high by 150 ft rolls. I also used the heavy duty fence poles every 10 feet to support the wire, on top of the fence i used a heavy wieght single strand of galvanized wire and threaded it thru to support the top and make it more taunt. It has been up since then with hardly any problems, a tree or two fell across and a bear crashed thru once but its still in pretty good shape.

If you take 3, 150'rolls and encircle a brier or honeysuckle patch, that would be good start for puppies... ;)
