building a whelping kennel question

hey guys im going to build a whelping pen out of wood. I was just wondering if i can paint the wood on the inside and out, or is there different types of woods that are better for puppies to be whelped on. If i paint should i use latex or oil base. Any advice or pics would be great. Thanks SW

I built both of mine with Cedar slats, like for fencing and love them.
