When and how do you all train your pup to the use of a lead?

Just put them on it occasionally. I start around 3 mo. old, maybe once a week, give them a treat every couple min. and make the sessions short and sweet - doing something the like. They'll soon associate the lead w/ having fun and wont' think anything of it.

From as soon as a collar will fit the neck, on goes the leash. Practice, practice, practice. Take dog for a walk once or twice a day, around the yard, down the street. Make it fun, use treats. Carolyn

About 6 months old, put a collar on them and tie them out on a 6 foot line. They will lead break themselves.

A lead is a leash, usually 4-5' long used to "lead" the dog(s) around.

The biggest problem I have sometimes putting more than one on the lead is if they get tangled a bit, they fight, thinking the other guy is starting something.. Mostly when they are energetic getting in the back of the truck, it's fine when we get to the woods, they are concentrating on getting off it and getting to work.
No problem when they're tired, you can clip on half a dozen then, LOL!

I'll second what duece said. I always put them on a tie out for a day and usually don't have any problems going to a lead after that. It also reduces how much they associate the breaking with you. So when you come out and snap a lead to them your a hero.

Next battle will be teaching them not to pull. Have fun with that one.
