Oh boy,here goes! I am new to this forum and already I feel that I maybe asking a question that could cause a heated debate.That is not my intention at all.My own cousin already hates me for asking him.lol Anyhow,I amlooking for a beagle puppy for rabbit hunting and that will make a good hunting companion.I am undecided on what gender to go with.Is one prefered over the other for hunting or trainability?Thankyou...Ray

Overall, females seem to be less independent of their owners, but I'm partial to males. If I could only have one, it would be a male. If I were going to keep it in the house, too, I'd have a female (less likely to "mark") but I'd spay her. Spaying doesn't hurt their hunt one bit.

Take what I tell you with a grain of salt. We're sitting here in the city with 17 beagles - 11 males and 6 females.

I also have several males and females....but if I could only have one it would be a female. Just in my experience, females seem to be less headstrong, more tractable, and easier to train. The other thing is, market wise, females are more valueable, as everyone seems to be looking for a good female to breed.

I know that this is an old post,but how would you like an update.?You guys really sucked me in (LOL).Just kidding!I went out and bought a male and he went through his first hunting season this past season and he really did very well.I bought him when he was 6 months old so I started him and worked him right up until he was hunting for the gun.He went into this hunting season at about a year and a half old.I had so much fun with him that I desided that I would just have to get another beagle to run with him next year so this time I bought a little female.See what you did?Do you think that I have the fever?.....Thanks,Ray

you need some of each.both have there advantages and drawbacks.heat cycles are a females bigest drawback.males can be bullheaded.

I have had males and females in the field. The female seen to get right to work and the males have to pee on every bush it passes and then to work .

If i was in your shoea i would most likely go with a female the tend to be easier to get to handle and try to please the owner alot more.Unlike males can be really hard headed.
