Looking into buying first Beagle.....

I am looking to buy a pet for myself. I am a 22 year old student who wants a pet for some company/affection and watchfulness. I'm just looking to ask some questions of someone who has Beagles as pets. I think they are really cute and could be a lot of fun. However, I may be starting medical school soon and will be gone from home for classes. I don't want to get a pup if they are going to be miseralbe and howl anytime I'm gone. That's not fair to them....or potential neighbors. So, I am wondering if the pup were trained so that when the owner is gone, it goes in a crate with blankets/toys it would be ok until I got home. My other question is about housebreaking. I have read that beagles aren't the easiest to train. I do plan on doing obedience school, but again would like to hear from someone with experience. Thank you to anyone who took time to read this long message (sorry!) and is willing to give some advice. Thanks, CRH
