How to get pup to hunt in thick briars?

Post by joakes »

I have a pup that hunts hard, when he is with another dog. He does good in the briars and brush piles. If I take him solo he does not want to hunt in the brush. Is this just lack of experience and is there something that I can do to make him do better when he is solo. He is 10 mths old, but has not been out but about 6 or 7 times. thanks for suggestions and tips in advance.

i had the same thing with my dog, but not now, she is a year and half and does not do that anymore.i took her with an older dog for just a few weeks and he showed her alot. she really gets right in now, but has trouble when there's snow becaue she doesn't always just jump right in the snow, i have to walk in with her for her to hunt out were i want her to in the snow, i think its because she doesn't like getting her feet cold or something. but im hoping she will change and get stronger feet, i would walk on the train tracks with her and she wouldn't go over the snow bank to hunt..she would go over the bank alittle bit search and then come back and run up and down the tracks looking for scent...and then i would walk in were i want her to hunt and she would go in there...but its weird because she could be like 200 yards down the tracks and see me go in the woods and she would go in were she was way down there becaue she saw me go in...i don't know if thats good or bad that she won't go in deep snow unless i will?
hope i helped

Experience will help. I am no expert, but my broke dogs dont run solo very well the first couple of times. After a while they pick it up. Patience.
