Drontal??

I have used a combo of Safe-Guard (for intestinal parasites) and Ivermectin (for heartworm preventative) for several years and had excellent results. I used the S-G every other month, 3 days in a row and the vitamin "I" at the first of every month.

Recently some of my buddies convinced me to try Drontal instead of S-G. I have given all my hounds one dose of Drontal (last month) and did not see any expelled worms at all. I'm assuming my hounds were completely worm-free before given Drontal. At their last vet checkup they were anyhow. I was told that I dont have to give my hounds Drontal but every 3 months, is that correct?

Is Drontal really better than the regiment I was giving w/ the S-G???

I am having to order the Drontal from overseas every time I need it.....I can drive 6 miles and buy S-G (in the paste form) for 6 bucks a tube, at a much cheaper price too than Drontal. I want to do what's best for the hounds, but not at higher prices if it's not necessary.

I will continue using Drontal if Doc S or someone can convince me it REALLY IS better than the S-G routine.......

Is it???

Only advantage Drontal would have over the fenbendazole would be tapeworms. Drontal will give a more complete coverage of all species of tapes. Using the fenbendazole is also a little more time consuming, but not a big deal. I generally recommend ivermectin monthly and fenbendazole 3 days in a row every 90 days.

OK, and what dosage do you recommend for the monthly Ivermectin treatment? Thanks, CHH

0.1ml per 11# of bodyweight will do a good job with heartworm prevention and hookworm control. This is extra-label and therefore technically illegal, but folks do it and might as well do it right!
