I have read many breed standards, including AKC's for the Beagle.
A correct bite is scissors. Many dogs we looked at prior to buying a pup, had over, under and flush bites.
A few breeders there in said of the undershots, that the dog had a bad habit of playing tug of war as a pup and pulled the lower jaw out, that smidgen which placed the bottom row just in front of the top. Funny deal was the canines and molars are in the correct placement, and the dog was fit, so eating wasn't an issue.
Walked away from a nice pup thinking this fella was handing me a line, but on another board, read the same thing!
Are these rumours, a 'good excuse' or possible that the undershot be enviromentally caused, not hereditary?

In general I think bad bites are genetic. That being said I think poor nutrition/over nutrition and poor overall health such as heavy worm burdens could also play a roll.
