I just got my first beagle pup last saturday. He is about 15 weeks old. I was wondering why they remove the dew claws. Are they supose to be on the front and back? He has his on the front. What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing so?
The dew claws are removed for personal reasons. Some will say that they get caught up when running in crusting snow and will bleed and get sore to the point to cause the dog to go gimp. For house pets, they are removed so that they won't scratch up your legs so much if they jump up on you. I remove them on my pups when they are a couple days old, it makes a cleaner looking hound (in my opinion) and it is one less nail to have to trim on each leg.
Hope this answers your question.

Listen guys will you tell me one more time how you remove dew claws!!!!!!!!!! Calm down Patch, calm down, I'm just kidding. I think I'm having a lack of dew claw problems on my little male. He's got em removed. He's OK on the straitaways but in turns he spins out bad is this from the dew claw removal???? Now my little females got em and she can whip him in the turns!!! You people from Indy can appreciate my concerns here.....
CREW CHIEF, I THINK WHAT HAPPENED WAS YOU TOOK
TOO MUCH OFF. THAT MAKES HIM LIGHTER IN THE BACK
END,THUS CAUSING SPINOUTS. I LIVE 75 MILES SOUTH
OF INDY, BUT I STILL APPRECIATE YOUR PROBLEM. YOU
COULD TRY SOME LEG WEIGHTS.

Or, maybe when you took the hound & the cat to the vet, he got confused and declawed & neutered the hound and tatooed an removed the dew claws from the cat...lol...That would explain the spin-outs.
This may change your trialing plans as the male may be better suited for LP and the female for PP. He would surely get picked up for going over the end in PP...lol
The main thing is, you have fun with them ...Best of luck...Patch
I am having a ball her guys!!!!! Fun is what this is all about ain't it Patch?? I can dig the weights bunny buster, now if I can find snake chaps for them my wife will feel better!!!!!
As a new born(3-5 days old), take a pair of toenail nippers, place the dewclaw(front or rear) in the nippers and make sure it is even with the leg. With one firm squeeze, nip the toe off. Place puppy back with mama to nurse and be cleaned. If one bleeds abit, a sulfur stick or a bit of blood stop applied with a q-tip should get it sealed over...
Best of luck...Patch
My last litter proved me wrong. I had one hound who never had thrown pups with rear dew claws. I was so confinent. One pup had one dew claw out of five, can you believe that????? In my face or what?
The one I expected to I had surgically removed because hers were huge, not one pup out of six had one??
Go figure!
