We usually do it on day 3 with a pair of finger nail clippers. Just snip off and dab a little styptic stick if bleeding.

I took my pups to the vet 3-4 days old. They cut out both front and rear dew claws and put a stitch in to close the front it does a real nice job, $10 a pup. I was told sometimes when you snip them off yourself that they sometimes can grow back.

I just did some for the first time. I only will only remove the rear ones. I had one pup with dew claws. Between day three and five is a good time to do it. I took hemastats and clamped them close to the leg. Then i scraped off the claw with my fingernail and let the clamps loose. Was my first time so I was stressed. They seam to be ok. Only time will tell.
Good luck

It will not grow back...
But, you must nip it flush & even with the leg, any part left will go ahead and develop into bone and you will have a stub that may work thorugh the healed skin over time.
Putting the nippers up close and even with the leg will assure you make the snip at the joint and not out where the bone will develop and it will heal smooth and if done properly, you'll never know the toe was removed.
It does take some nerve to start out with and I'm never happy about doing it but after having a few bad experiences with the rear toe on hounds, when as a boy, I know the benifit to the hound by having them removed and it is worth the unpleasant task.
Best of luck...Patch

Let me tell you something. People have been removing dew claws from their pups for years. It is no different than taking them to a vets office to do it. It is more cost sufficient to do it yourself, not to mention less stress on momma and the pups having to take a ride the first few days of life. Taking into consideration all the problems that can arise later on from not removing them, I guess I will continue in this manner. Takes alot more out of them if you wait to have them done thru a vet when they are older pups, then you have to give anesthesia which can also cause more complications and distress. You need to worry about them chewing or getting the staples caught on something. Or even infection. Then what if you have a hound that shoves the bandages down around and cuts the circulation off???? My personal opinion is take them off while they are little. Dont know what the issue would be :???: ........Vets dont use anesthesia when they are that little, and doctors dont use anesthesia for circumcision on babies either.

No, let me tell you somthing!!! About 12 years ago I was at Piedmont National Wildlife Area for a deer hunt. Quess who showed up in all their glory?? PETA, have you ever been around any of these A------'s??? They had tamburines, drums, trumpets, horns and anything else that could make noise!!! It was a NIGHTMARE to say the least. Now the Ga. General assembly has passed rules to protect hunters rights in our state. Has NH done that?? Our dog deer hunting is under attack down here and we can't use dogs on bears either. This year our dog deer hunters have to apply for a permit ($100.00) and its only good for the piece of property thats on the permit, unless you own your own land. Now how long before they come after us beaglers I ask you. I'm telling you don't put this kind of stuff on this website or any other dog website, the animal righters are getting stronger every year. They already feel we are the low life of the hunting world as it is cause we don't use FAIR CHASE TACTICS, you know, man against beast, one on one, you dig??? I'll garanteeeeee they watch all the hunting websites for sure just waiting to pounce on us for tattooing and this sort of thing and anything else they feel hurts the dogs. We ain't even into the rabbit part of it yet!!! Well I hope you ain't mad at me but we got to watch this close our rights are under fire big time, LIKE NEVER BEFORE!!!!!!

The question was "When and how to remove dew claws".
This is a procedure that is done for the welfare of the animal. It is done by most all dog owners whether it is a beagle or a boxer.
I think the question was appropriate for this site and I also think the answers that were given was very informative. Let's face it. Peta would like to do away with anything on this site or for that matter the whole site. That should not stop us from providing information to each other pertaining to subjects that would help us all take better care of our hounds.

I agree Completely with Oakhill on this Let em Watch!!!! Let em Yell We just have to yell louder. You think you got PETA and all them bad you Should be in the Northwest I think they all started Up hear and California and just kept breeding and Migrating! Heck ya Caint even go to a Dog show without em showin up!!!! BUT they aint stopin me from sayin or doing what i need to do to care for my hounds and my way of life!!!! I aint never backed down from one and will argue the point all day!!! As soon as you make them start defending their views they usually choke themselves! Most don’t have a logical thought in their head just what someone else put their for them. I feel that the loader we fight back the more our views are heard!! The only reason that they even exist is because they get all the Press and have Big money backing them. They have one whole group that don’t do nuthin but campaign for Money. Most of your ARA and Peta Folk aint never even held a JOB!!!
Oh Well Enough for now just somethin that gets stuck in my craw WE BACK DOWN TO FAST Don’t say this don’t say that OH BULL!!!!!
