Has anyone removed dew claws from a dog that was over 6 mths old ?
If so how did you do it,what did you use.How did it effect the dog?

The bone is pretty much grown at that point, I think it best to let a Vet do it. It requires putting the dog under anesthesia. Takes a week or so to heal and get the sutures out. Then all is normal.

Randy, I've removed them by putting a rubber band tightly around the dew claw and as close to the leg as possible. The dew claw will turn black and fall off in about a week to ten days. You may need to use side cuts to remove it after it has died. The dog limped some while the rubberband was on the dew claw. No ill effects to my dog.

It's a personal preferance.I don't like them myself .I clip them off of new
born pups that I raise at 2 to 3 days old using a set of nail clippers for
dogs. But I have a few older hounds that have them so this is what my post
is pertaining to.I have read that you can remove them at any age but I
would hate to ruin a good dog(know what I mean!) Personally the oldest
pup I have done was 7 weeks old and had no problems I used the clippers.I think I will try the rubber band deal suggested.I've banded bull
calves with no problems.I'll update this post after I've done it.
