pups in cold weather?

Post by bluecollar beagler »

ive got a question for those of you that have raised pups in cold weather. i put a thermometer on the inside of my box (36d"x36w"x30h")on the side wall and it is saying the temp in the box is 74 degrees with a 100w bulb. in the center where the bulb is pointing is definitely alittle warmer just to stick my hand down there and feel... do you think this is alright for the pups ? i know once she's in the box and the pups the inside temp should raise just alittle but im trying to be on the safe side here. our temps just dropped to the low 20 and in the teens tonight... my barn is insulated well but its still COLD!! i noticed she didnt eat much at all yesterday so im figuring it wont be long.. she's due the first of next week but im wanting to make sure i dont goof anything up and have the box too cold!!!!

My setup is basically the same except I use 2 60watt which are on back back wall of box and thermostats on front wall with a folded over burlap over hole, keeps out drafts and helps keep same temp. Doesn't keep dog from going in or out either

when they come out they are at about 100 degrees the warmer the box is for them the better --the first couple days at least ---if you can get them dry off really helps

i put another brooders light in the box last night. gonna check it this afternoon when i get home from work and see what the temp is after its been in there a few hours.. im keeping my fingers crossed she holds off having them until monday.. the temps are supposed to get back up in the 40s instead of the 10-20s where they are now!!! that will help my cause out alot right there!!

last night at 9 i check the thermometer on the side of the box and it said 50 degrees and the center of the box where the one light was pointed said 60 degrees on the floor. last night was brutally cold too. im hoping the two lights help heat it up alittle more. i put down a couple layers of newspaper on the floor of the box for when she has them and ill swap out to some blankets when she has them i guess. i put a security camera on the box last night as well so i can moniter her from the house at night. hopefully i can catch her having them and be up there.

worst case scenerio, i have a 100k btu blow heater ill put in the middle of the barn pointed toward that kennel to warm it up!!!

My female just had 5 pups 4 females 1 male, for the first 2 weeks i had a friend keep them in a heated building, he used a wood burner and they had no trouble, I moved them home to my brode boxs and cut a hole in 1 end and built a box and but a electric heater in set on 75 they are doing just fine, bought the fan at wal-mart for $14.00 and it had a blower on it. used rubber mat on door ways to cut off air, female has no trouble going outside.
