I need some education on COCIDIOUS (SP)
What is it, how do you get rid of it, can it be passed from pups to dogs?
Where can I get albon without going to the vet? ie do they sell it from that med store in Australia?

Re: educate
I use CORID (amprolium) Oral Solution in my pups drinking water. It's used as a preventive and also as a 5-day treatment of coccidiosis. You can pick it up at a Tractor supply or most feed stores.
Very seldom will a grown dog ever come down with it.

Go to Hoegger Goat Supply and you can buy a pint of Di-Methox (generic Albon) for $9.95. You can give it orally, 1.1 cc per 5 pounds, or mix it with a liquid vitamin supplement, like Dyne, at a 4 to 5 ratio and give 2.4 cc per 5 pounds. I've tried the amprolium and it also worked, but took much longer to work.

Thanks guys, jsut a couple more questions, I have got 3 pups from 3 diffrent kennels, all three were healthy when I got them all three have gotten it. Is there something that I am doing wrong? Is it a parasite, or a bacteria, is it in the ground, or the water? How or what should I do the next time I bring a pup home?

Coccidiosis is the disease caused by coccidian infection. Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract of animals, caused by coccidian protozoa. The disease spreads from one animal to another by contact with infected feces or ingestion of infected tissue. Diarrhea, which may become bloody in severe cases, is the primary symptom.
People often first encounter coccidia when they acquire a young puppy who is infected. The infectious organisms are canine specific and are not contagious to humans.
Coccidia in dogsYoung puppies are frequently infected with coccidia and often develop active Coccidiosis—even puppies obtained from diligent breeders. Infected puppies almost always have received the parasite from their mother's feces. Typically, healthy adult animals shedding the parasite's oocysts in their feces will be asymptomatic because of their developed immune systems. However, undeveloped immune systems make puppies more susceptible. Further, stressors such as new owners, travel, weather changes, and unsanitary conditions are believed to activate infections in susceptible animals.
Symptoms in young dogs are universal: at some point around 2–3 months of age, an infected dog develops persistently loose stools. This diarrhea proceeds to stool containing liquid, thick mucus, and light colored fecal matter. As the infection progresses, spots of blood may become apparent in the stool, and sudden bowel movements may surprise both dog and owner alike. Other symptoms may include poor appetite, vomiting, dehydration, and sometimes death. Coccidia infection is so common that any pup under 4 months old with these symptoms can almost surely be assumed to have coccidiosis.
If one dog of a litter has coccidiosis, then most certainly all dogs at a breeder's kennels have active coccidia infections. Breeders should be notified if a newly-acquired pup is discovered to be infected with coccidia.

Birds usaually carry it (chickens etc.) the pups can get it from the mother also. The mother may not show signs of it but can pass it on to the pups. If the pups get stressed due to a long trip or new surroundings it can flair up. You need to take the pup to the vet as soon as possibly it can and will kill a pup due to dehydration in only a few days. i lost one that I got from Tennessee last year. Neither the mother or any of the other pups had it. I called the man I got the pup from. he told me he could send me my money back, wait until he bred them again and get pick of the litter, orpick out another pup from a different litter. He also made me take gas money.

Re: educate
The reason why coccidia is so hard to eradicate is the standard meds do NOT actually kill the coccidia protozoa, they are coccidiostats (which means these drugs merely stop the protozoa from reproducing so fast, but do not actually kill them). And, because the eggs of the coccidia protozoa are transmitted through feces, there is really nothing you can do to eradicate the problem completely, though you can certainly minimize it through kennel cleanliness as well as preventative treatment protocols (especially with brood bitches that have been exposed).
In fact, many people tragically watch their newborn pups die-off slowly ... one by one ... because they don't realize the mother herself is passing the coccidia on to her pups through her milk ... which the owner could have prevented with the right medical protocol to the mother before she gave birth.
