A longshot here... is there food packed between his jaw and cheek? Some old friends' dog had that happen... looked like swelling after you get your wisdom teeth pulled. It would stay there until you removed it. Another thing might be he got stung by a bee.

Hey dandaneen

I had a lump recently show up on one of my dogs that was the size of a golf ball and then got bigger over a weeks time and it was below his jaw and went down to his throat as you were saying. It didn't really seem to bother him that much so i still took him out and ran him and after a long day of running him i got home and started leting the dogs out of the box and I seen that he had blood and puse running all down his neck and then after a couple of days all of the blood and puse had draind out it was basiclly flat. I still haven't asked a vet about it but i have asked some Old Timer's i run with and they said it could have been were he had got stuck by a briar real deep and it got infected or they said it could have been his saliva gland and they said if it was his saliva gland to take him to the vet and they would lance it off.
Well I Hope This Helps You Alittle!

lump

Post by oakhill »

Probably a sign of infection somewhere in the hounds body. Could be ears, throat, tooth, etc.... The lymph nodes in the throat collect the infection. Sometimes it will open and let the infection drain. Antibiotics and warm salt water compresses on the rupture should take care of it.

have had this condition before. A piece of straw had gotten in the dogs mouth and got lodged down in the throat. had to bring to vet after lump got so big and he slit to and put drain tube in. then put on antibiotics. I also had a dog get a stick caught in the throat. Didnt know until the swelling started, looked in throat and was lucky enough to see stick and oull out. was very slimy, must have been there a while. put on antibiotics and was fine.

It does sound like some kind of abcess. Did you get to the vets and have it checked out yet? We always like to find out how it turns out. Then we know what to look for if that time ever comes.
Good luck
