I think my little female pup who is in heat may have been breed to the wife's mutt this morning when my daughter let them get together. Is there a shot that the vet can give her to abort any pups and if so does it harm the female?
Any info appreciated.

yes there is.but my vet wanted to wait a month and do a preg test.said the shot is very hard on them.

Thanks for the info. I ended up calling my vet and he said that the shot had too many adverse effects.

Just so you all know......my vet laughed when asked if the "morning after" shot for a dog could cause problems. I had a female get bred here and she is very mouthy and young, I didnt want any pups and we got the shot. I had been told it could do all kinds of things from making them go nuts to never being able to come in heat again, when I asked him he seriously laughed!

My vet is an older man and was in the first graduating class of vets from Purdue University. He said he has been giving that shot for years and NEVER seen anything happen to any of the females who got it. He said it must be given within the first 72 hours.......the only downside he could tell me is that the dog would come back into heat within 3 days and stay the entire cycle again, which she did.

We did notice something that happened soon after the shot. We had this female kenneled with another female and a few days after the shot we noticed the other female in the kennel was missing hair off her neck....after watching and consulting with our vet we discovered that the dog that got the shot was eating the hair from the other dogs neck......so I guess there is a chance they can get goofy, LOL! She seems fine now.

The way I look at it is I didnt want no mutts, I didnt want to maybe kill her having pups young..........so what did I have to lose?

mabe if they would not make you wait a month it would not be so hard on them.

I gave this shot to my accidentally bred female about 5 years ago within 2 hours after the breeding. The dog has had miserable heats since then. She has a false pregnancy after every heat. Her blood goes low, hair turns white. i would never have it done again. I have finished the dog but it was never a good dog during or 60-70 days after her heat. Just my experience. I have been extremely careful about heats after this disaster. only way to prevent trouble.

I've used this shot on 3 or 4 different females with no adverse effects. I was told of all the possible side effects and what to look out for. Uterine and urinary tract infection being the most common. It's funny though, my Vet owns the business and will give the shot, however he has a female associate that refuses to give it. I guess I know where she stands on the issue of abortion. Ooops! Sorry, that's another topic on another website.
