Kinda gross,but I gotta ask.

Post by Rockdog »

I am a proud new beagle owner as some of you may know. I have been out with Chopper alot in the yard working obedience and such. Well, my wife has chickens. Almost 30 of them. Free ranging to boot. As you can imagine, there is a bunch of droppings over the field and property around the house. Chopper has decided these are tasty little tidbits. Drives me crazy, because I can't keep him from snatching them up :mad2: . Is this a harmful habit? It grosses me out for sure, but is it dangerous to him? Thanks a bunch,Rockdog.

I think if you google it, you'll find the coccidia in birds and dogs are different strains of the virus, or maybe I'm off again. Ayways, always good to have facts straight. Let me know what you find :?:

I have been battling coccidiosis for a few yrs now after unknowingly buying a hound that had it. It doesn't affect my older hounds but as soon as a pup is on the ground near my kennel it gets it. I've not raised pups for around three yrs and this is one of the reasons. I plan to raise a litter this year and also plan to get a couple of pups from another person. If I keep Albon in their drinking water will it prevent the pups from getting infected? The research I've done indicated that each species of animal has its own strain but that birds can be carriers of different strains that could infect various species.
