Adding weight

Post by ahoward »

I recently bought a really nice running dog, but he was really skinny. The guy said that he kept his dogs that way and they ran better/harder. I have put some weight on him, but his is still too thin for my liking. You can see every rib in his body, but he is starting to get more stocky in the rest of his body. I feed him extra, but that just produces more waste. I began feeding him hi protein/hi fat food (26/18). I give him vitamins. I give him milkbones, treats, etc. How can I get a little weight on him, so he truely looks healthy? :???:

the best thing for a skinny hound is to go to your local slaughter house and get a bunch of pork fat,,,,,,boil until greasy give it to them and they will gain twice as much weight belive me it works,,,,,

Here is a tried and true recipe that works for adding weight and shine. Also a perfect after hunt snack to help recover. It doesn't take a lot. A couple a day a couple of times a day until you start to see a change. They are also easy to keep on hand.

Satin Balls
Ingredients

10 pounds hamburger meat [the cheapest kind]
1 lg. box of Total cereal
1 lg. box oatmeal
1 jar of wheat germ
1 1/4 cup veg oil
1 1/4 cup of unsulfured molasses
10 raw eggs AND shells (I blend them in the blender first to grind shells up better)
10 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
pinch of salt

Mix all ingredients together, much like you would a meatloaf.

Divide into 10 quart freezer bags and freeze.

Thaw as needed and feed raw!

Would it be possible for you to post a few photographs of your new dog?

The reason I ask is you said this dog is a "really nice running dog," which to me indicates that he already IS healthy. Two more things come to mind and that is (1) the fellow you got him from is right, all dogs run better when lean, and (2) some dogs, just like humans, are light-built and some dogs are stocky-built.

Further, just like stocky humans, stocky animals make the WORST runners, not the best. How many "stocky" tri-athletes or long-distance runners have you ever seen? How many "stocky" greyhounds have you seen at the track? The truth is, many well-meaning people try to make their dogs fat (ahem, stocky), thinking this means their dogs are "healthy," but in fact the state of being fat is never a healthy way to keep a performance animal.

Therefore, before you try to make your dog really fat at this point, it would be helpful if you could post a few photos of your dog to make sure this is the best route to take at all.
