inability to retract the penis in a pup

Just went through this problem. 5 month old pup was put into the pen with a female in heat by one of the kids. She did not realise what could happen. Well the worst happened and needless to say my pup was walking around with things hanging out 
. He was like this for hours and in a great deal of pain, saddest thing I ever saw, he could not even lay dpwn or sit. I spoke to 3 different vets and was told by all there was nothing I could do. They all told me not to try to do anything with him and that if there was no change by morning I would have to bring him in and that it would possibly need to be fixed surgically. Luckily my better half refuses to take impossible as an answer and looked up the condition on the internet and possible helps for such, after hours of cold water salt soaks, chilled oil, and cold rags she finally fixed it. The dog now seems to be A OK. Has anyone ever run across this before and what was done to fix it?
