Dog want eat.
I have a female dog that has not eaten anything for a week and I am wondering if anyone has any ideas why she is not but first let me tell you about the situation. I saw this female run and she was a fire ball and shot out of the check area like a rocket and none of the dogs in the field with her that day could run any where close to her and some were around the speed of my dogs so I bought her but she was shy around strangers so I didn't run her for a week. I kept her up so she could get used to me and I noticed she was eating very little when I first got her and I just figured it was because of a change of dog food. I ran her last Friday and she hunted ok but when the rabbit was up she just stayed behind my dogs and didn't give much mouth and didn't have that fire and still after running her with my dogs 4 times she just follows them around with no energy now the problem is that she has not eaten anything other than a couple bites of table scraps each day since last Friday. I have been giving her Nutri-Cal hoping this will help her appitate to no avail. Now what is real scary is that I have not cleaned any poop from under her side of the kennel since last Thursday and without bowl movements I know she won't last long. Any ideas what could be causing this? With my work schedule I don't have time to take her to the vet and they are closed when I get home from work.

Not good not good at All....
here is what I would Do..
CALL THE VET TELL them what is Going on...
THEN GET somebody to take her in for you!!!!!! A Friend, brother, Sister, X Wife, or the neighbor kid down the Street!!!!!!
Sorry For Being this Way but if the Dog means anything!!! Where there is a Will!!! there is a way!!!!
Until the Vet can See her try putting a little bacon grease on her kibble see if she will take it that way.
The bacon Grease will also help her pass anything that could be blocking her up..
But like you Said without a trip to the vet this late in the game she wont last long......
It may be nothing but a week is a long time without eating or defecating....

Re: Dog want eat.
Is she running any kind of fever?
I had to flush out a couple of pups that decided to eat a bunch of those chopped up corn cobs they use for bedding(pups eat everything), mineral oil to both ends and some running worked it through.
What type bedding is she in? or could she have gorged herself on anything and plugged up the works? Does she sometimes act like she's trying to go but can't?

Re: Dog want eat.
I'd see the vet, a beagle that won't eat is rarer than a UFO. If it's not eating there is a big problem.
Re: Dog want eat.
i would get her to the vet as soon as possible. had a friend that had a male that had not eaten much in two weeks . took him to the vet today dog had an enlarged heart gave him some meds. he called later anddog was doing better then vet called back and dog had died. i would not wait to long to get her to vet. not eating is not the norn. good luck

I agree with the general consensus that anytime an adult refuses to eat this is cause for concern. I also agree there are many different ways to get your dog to a vet, which (if she hasn't eaten for a week) you need to do ASAP or she is going to be a memory.
There are many factors that could be in play here, and it could just be something as simple as "separation anxiety" or something as complex as intestinal blockage. If I read your post right, you just bought this bitch, so the first thing I would do is contact the owner and (1) ask what he feeds her and (2) ask if she's eaten anything she shouldn't have just prior to leaving. The bitch may just not like what you're feeding (I've seen that before), or her whole world may have crumbled by the fact she just changed hands. Many dogs don't care who owns them or who feeds them, but some dogs are so loyal and so into their original owner that their worlds literally crumble when they get sold. Oftentimes these are highly-intelligent animals who are able not only to distinguish who's-who but who also form intense bondings with their owners. It sounds like she was performing well for her original owner, not you, and that the problem happened when she changed hands and became yours. If you were a little boy who loved your parents, but they just handed you over to some new parents, you might "shut down" too! Kids do this all the time when they get left at preschool; they just shut down. Many dogs can be the same way when they get attached to an owner.
I sold a man a dog once, as a puppy, and years later he brought her back to me to be bred and left her for a couple of weeks. You could literally see this bitch's sad face; her mouth, ears, eyes, everything just hung. The logic of her universe was gone. She ate but she was clearly miserable without her owner. When the guy came back after I was done with the breedings, you never saw a happier dog than when she saw "her human"

On the more serious side, she could have blockage (eaten something that got stuck), or she could have babesia (a blood parasite that causes anemia). Not having any stool is a sign of blockage, however, and surgery is what you're going to need to do if indeed it is blockage. If caught early, I agree you can give them a cup of mineral oil to lube 'em up and help them pass the problem, but if it's coming up on a week she doesn't have much time left. A bad blockage can turn into an intussusception, which basically means the intestine starts devouring itself, which will kill the bitch w/o surgery.
Unfortunately, no one here can diagnose your bitch and tell you which of the many different things if could be that's wrong with your bitch. IMO you will have to take her to a vet to make this determination, if her problem is something more complicated than a separation anxiety from her owner or she just doesn't like your feed choice. I would start with trying to feed her what he was feeding her, but if that isn't the solution you need to get up and handle it. You only have so much time to do something about it, as they can only go so long without eating, and it's already been a week ...
Good luck.
Re: Dog want eat.
very good post littleblackbook Glad to have you aboard by the way!!
I Also totally Agree with the seperation Anxiety theory have seen it ourselves, I have one in the house Now that after his momma passed he was just Down for weeks not the same hound at all..We moved another into the house he had been close with and he improved over night..Every time I leave my Wife says he will mope around for a few hours and Wont have much to do with me when I get home wont even look at me for a few hours...teachin me a lesson I guess LOL
All good advise on here And i was not trying to come off as a Smart Azz But just get the hound to a vet for both your well beings Always better to make sure than to be Sorry later..I just have never had one NOT EAT for a week maybe hit and miss but not eatinfg at all is not a good sign..
ALSo great Advise on Calling the previous owner I had not thought of that As we usually Always let the new owner know all we can about the hounds and thier little quirks.....

Re: Dog want eat.
Thanks for all the replys and no TC I don't think you are trying to be a Smart Azz just concerned and giving good advice. She started eating better yesterday and seemed to have more energy. She never stopped eating completely just a couple of bites. I gave her a laxative when I got home from work Wednesday and she had had a bowl movement yesterday when I got home. A friend of mine called a vet for me and told her what was going on and after he told the vet about the laxative she told him that she probably had some kind of blockage but my friend gets off work at 12:00 today and is taking her to the vet for me as soon as he gets off work. I ask the fellow that I got her from what he was feeding her and we both are feeding the same feed but he hadn't noticed her not eating much when I got her from him because he had 3 dogs kenneled together and she would always run back in the dog house when he came to feed them. Like I said she was kennel shy and he had only had her about a week before he sold her to me but he said he had noticed her loosing weight because she was over weight when he got her and when he sold her to me she looked like she was in running shape although he had only run her a couple of times. She has gotten over her kennel shyness with me because every night when I get home I will got out in my shed and let her come in and lay around me and give her some TLC. Thanks to all for your answers and replys.

Re: Dog want eat.
Thank you TC
Sometimes we forget how traumatic it can be for a dog to change hands. Everything the dog was raised with and knew is suddenly gone and no one can explain to them what's happening and why. Many dogs don't seem to care, but many in fact do care. I would imagine this would be even worse if the dog was shy.
Ky. Hunter, it sounds like she's okay just needs the TLC you're giving her. I always give any new dog 3 weeks of "house time" to turn them from somebody else's dog into my dog. I bathe them, de-worm them, and then bring them in. I also do this with any pup I breed that I plan on keeping and not selling too. The main 2 house dogs inside are good-natued and well-mannered and so the new dog/pup kinda learns the ropes from the established dogs. In this way, the new dog gets acclimated both to his new surroundings easier, as well as to me easier, and they never seem to forget it.
They always go back outside as a better, smarter, and happier dog.

Re: Dog want eat.
The dog is acting fine now and has regained her energy and fire power. I ran her 5 hours yesterday but I did notice twice that when she had a bowl movement it was hard as a rock and I took my tally-ho stick and broke it up and it was dry as dirt inside buy all in all she is fine now.

Re: Dog want eat.
if you ever have one that wont eat. open a can of tuna fish. if they dont eat that take them to the vet immediately. i have tried everything Jack mackrel, roast beef etc but nothing works like Tuna. Ive had some eat it but I still took to the vet cause i knew they werent right. they cant resist tuna.

Re: Dog want eat.
no problem. ive had a few females after giving birth to not jump back on the food. so ive played around with all kinds of things. raw tuna is the best i keep several cans around at all times for this purpose.
Something else i do for feeding bitches after whelping when i want them to eat is boil rice and break up roast beef or some kind of meat when the water starts to boil. Add rice put cover on and cook it normal. When done Ill mix in the tuna into the rice and meat. For females that have just given birth the rice helps settles the stomach and the meat well it just protein and nutrients...lol I had a female years ago that got real weak after birthing and I was just letting things go. After two days the pups were pulling her way down and I had to take her to the vet. So I always make sure they eat within 24 hrs.
