Hi, Doc! My uncle feeds peanut butter along with the cheapest, lowest protein, lowest fat dog feed he can find to his foxhounds. He buys the peanut butter in 50 gallon drums which, according to him, holds about 600 lbs. of peanut butter at a cost of $55. He said the dog feed is used just as a filler. He says it is the best feed he has ever fed, not to mention the cheapest. I was skeptical at first but after several months of buying my high quality, high priced , name brand dog food to feed to my beagles, and listening to my uncle rib me for doing so, I have to admit that his foxhounds look just as good, if not better than my beagles ! He feeds it to both his pups & adult hounds and they are just as healthy looking as you could ask for and have the slickest shiniest coats you have ever seen. He says it's the same peanut butter that you buy at the grocery store. I was curious as to how it compares with our "high quality" feeds and exactly what your opinion is on this subject? It could mean saving alot of dough, and I'm not just talking peanuts! Thanks & God bless!

last winter i was having trouble keeping weight on my hounds....after making sure they were free of all parasites and healthy i began feeding each dog 1 slice of bread with the cheapest peanut butter i could find....i added this to their normal feeding..and it worked....dogs were able to keep the weight on and i didnt see any change in their stool and they seemed to be able to keep their energy level up in order to stay warm in the winter months....i just started to feed it to them this year....

WHERE IN THE WORLD DO YOU GET A 55 GALLON DRUM OF PEANUT BUTTER?

I have a jar of Peter Pan here:

for a serving of 2 tablespoons
the calories are 190 - calories from fat is 140
total fat 17 grams (which is 26% of a 2000 daily value calorie diet)
Trans fat is 3.5 (18% of the daily value)
6% sodium (140mg)
Carbs are 6 grams
Dietary fiber 2 grams
Protein is 7 grams

Basing this on the "el cheapo" dog feed I'ld say one never knows just how complete the diet is, long term Im talking. It takes vitamins & minerals as well as the protein and fats to complete the diet.

It sounds like a good way to put a few pounds on the hounds. Keep us posted on your results. It sounds interesting, for sure.

Couple thoughts...one it will add a lot of fat calories...two it is going to be high in protein...vitamin, mineral content may be questionable though. I would also worry about stability buying it in such large amounts. I can't see where it could do any harm using it as a supplement, and would probably be a good one. One final thought...peanut allergies are not uncommon in dogs, so it may have some undesirable side-effects in some individuals.
