Have a pup just turned 1 yr. and his hair has almost completely fallen off his snout, leaving it looking black & leathery. This doesn't seem to be painful for him, and has no signs of infection. I've changed his kennel situation to try and eliminate the possibility of him rubbing it on something. About 4 mnths ago he had a spot on his side about 1/2" wide and 3" long that was missing hair, I figured he just was laying weird, or was itching it, so I put bag balm on it for a few days and gave him fresh cedar chips and the hair grew back in no time. I tried the same method with his snout but no luck. Could he be allergic to the cedar chips? If so whe wouldn't his hair fall off all over?

I don't know about hair coming off just his snout, but yes dogs can be allergic to cedar chips. Our field champion is allergic to TREATED cedar chips. Hair came off in spots all over his sides. Took almost 2 months to get him straighened up 100%. Hope you find out what's causing the problem with your dog.

My female beagle had bare spots on both of her sides.
Vet diagnosed it as a thyroid problem.
She is taking a pill twice a day and it seems to have helped.

That is exactly what I was going to say. My sister and her husbands boxer had the same problem, thinning hair on his sides/back and major weight gain. I'm not sure if this is your problem b/c the bag balm cleared it up.

try a little bacon grease. I always keep some around for small scrapes or spots where the hair gets thin from a healed cut or raw spot. used to use it all the time when I used to keep horses. seems like they always had a thin spot from a scrape or something and it'll flat put the hair back on them unless it's something serious like an allergie or something.

And they don't lick that off or try to IMMEDIATELY?
